My wife cut her dad off. He left the family when they were young and there were lots of struggles. Later in life with the children all grown he tried to make amends and the kids gave him a shot to redeem himself. For several years he showered them with gifts and was Mr Fun Guy. Then he ran off to Florida with his son's baby momma and now he's cut off permanently.

That sounds like wise advice. Our own emotions betray us and limit us as often as they help us if we are not vigilant about how we let them control us.
