My mother in law stuck us with a grown cat she couldn't keep. We treat the cat pretty badly and constantly remind her that our family was perfect before she came around and ruined everything.

You trolled too hard, man.

We get two responses. We pet her head for about two seconds and she backs away and/or hisses. Or just hisses.

Do not pet her head. I get the same response from a cat I have had for 7 years. She is very high strung.

I have to remember to pet her back. She interprets the head petting as threatening.

I talk to her for a while before trying to pet her. If she is receptive (if she rolls around and relaxes), I then pet her back. I stay away from her stomach.

Put a toy mouse on a string and pull it around. Let her decide when it is safe to come out. Do not toss the toy directly at her. Toss it to the side so as to not threaten her.

No that was actually pretty accurate. We treat the cat like a stepchild that was unwanted. Kind of a running joke in the house, I always tell her she's on thin ice and she needs to get a fricking job.

I have two.
I adopted one as a kitten and a few months later his mother.
Kitten took longer to adjust.

His mother was more relaxed, comes out to sit in my lap for tummy rubs, head butts me if she wants attention, and loves me picking her up to hold her. I play laser light with her and it's all good. Once she is tired she goes off to sleep.

Little one has more energy being only a year old and demands a lot of play time.
He loves bass frog and gets upset if I miss his play time 9:00 pm and 4:45 am.
He wakes me up at 2:30 am like clockwork to drink water from the faucet.

They both sleep in the king size bed with wife and I.
Older cat once she gets her spot it is all good she is out.
Little one kneeds my wife or myself and lightly sleeps.
If you wake him up he kneeds my wife or me until he falls alseep.
every morning like clockwork 4:30 am they both wake us up.

If older cat a nice cat it will adjust easier.

Actually adopting older cats and dogs is a great idea. The cats are calmer and the dogs typically are potty trained and don't chew up so much stuff that puppies can do.
Good for you.

Recently adopted a 3-4 year old cat that the shelter said was a little standoffish. Brought her home after being spayed and she hid out under the bed in a spare room for at least a week and a half, only coming out to eat, drink and poop when we weren't there. One day, we came home and the cat was under the dresser in another room. The next day, she came out and let us pet her. From then on, she's been almost too clingy.

I once agreed to look after a friend's cat for a week but after he dropped it off at my apartment and explained the concept of kitty litter, I kept the cat in a closed cardboard box in the shed and forgot about it. If I wanted to feed something and clean faeces, I wouldn't have put my mother in that home after her stroke. A week later, when my friend came to collect his cat, I pretended that I was not home and mailed the box to him. Apparently I failed to put enough stamps on the package and he had to collect it from the post office and pay eighteen dollars. He still goes on about that sometimes, people need to learn to let go.

We had a new cat hide behind the washing machine for more than a week, another cat that had been with us for years hid under a bed for a week because we moved to a new house. Normal stuff for cats.
