Growing up, I thought Starkville was the best place on Earth. Ended up in Idaho. Never going back.

I always loved my hometown, but got married and left right out of college - for work purposes it was easier and my wife needed to be near her Mom for health reasons, and have now lived in B.R. longer than I had lived there by a pretty substantial margin.
But I will retire there. My wife's Mom has passed and I'm nearing retirement or at least semi-retirement. And the crime and traffic in B.R. has just gotten a bit past having to put up with.
Love my LSU sports but I'll only be 45 minutes away.

Grew up on a farm, but the town where my grandparents and friends lived dried up and died in the 90s with NAFTA. My dad saw it coming and urged us to leave. This was the town that my family lived in for several generations. It once had everything you needed, there really was no reason to leave town.
-Then NAFTA came and textile plants closed.
-Then lumber yards and plywood plant closed.
-Then other industry left.
-Then families moved to find work.
-Then Walmart opened nearby, and local shops closed.
-Then an entire generation of kids moved away.
-Then the schools went to shiat.
-Then the town was bypassed.
-Agriculture is the main industry, but the evolution of equipment has reduced the people required by several fold. Our little farm of 2500 acres once employed 6 people or more, and you can run it with 2 people now.
-The corrupt school board, corrupt county commission, and corrupt everything ruin everything they touch.

I only wish I would have moved away from my hometown (BR) much sooner than I did
Only positive thing from 2016 flood was it made me move my immediate family out of BR so I don’t have to keep wasting so much money visiting there. It sucks when you add up flights and hotel and rental car and think about where you could have gone instead for that same amount of money
I will have to go back at some point to have a memorial for my dad and bury his ashes there (his wishes not mine). After that, I’ll likely only go back for family funerals.

I left my hometown when I was 6. Dad moved us to Baton Rouge because of a better job. My hometown was Pineville, last time I was there I did not recognize it. When I retire I'm getting the Hell out of louseyana. Baton Rouge is a shitehole.

We are going to have to leave Boise eventually because it's too damn expensive, but I think I will finally know what it feels like to have to leave home.
Damn, that's a shame. Of all the places that I have visited and lived in, I don't think I'd choose any of them over Boise. Had we not bought a house when we did, we may have had to do the same thing. Where are you heading next?

Wanted to escape my small town, did escape, played tons of music in lots of different places then suddenly realized: My hometown didn't suck like I thought it did, it was just a natural phase.
I don't live in my hometown, but certainly not because I hate it.

I wanted to leave from the time I was 12...old enough to know how sucky it was. I left my rural N La town of 1,800 and went to NLU in Monroe. Got married and moved to Amarillo, then Shreveport, Dallas, and Houston.
Every time I moved, it was to a bigger city. Houston is my favorite place I've lived. I liked Shreveport pretty well, because it was close to family.
I tell people all the time that I got out as fast as I could! I'm a city girl.

Married others we went to HS with, go to Orange Beach every year for a “vacation”, live in some cookie cutter DSLD shite where you get to choose the shade of beige you want your house and which side you want your garage on; overall I feel pretty bad for a majority of them.
They have love, a home, and expendable income. Yeah, what a friggin' nightmare.

As for my children, one is still in town, the other has moved away. Guess which one has the most fulfilling life…the one that moved away.
I have always encouraged my kids to go away if they feel like they belong elsewhere. I don't want them feel like they need to stay for me. Go and live and experience everything they want. My daughter says it's because I grew up in the middle of nowhere. She says everything you could want IS in Houston.

Mikelbr- that is so sweet until your kids all graduate college and move away because they want better opportunities and lifestyles.
Actually no. I would never want my kids to forego any opportunity because of me. I just tell them I am thrilled if they move somewhere I'd love to visit. My daughter just moved to Nashville and I am thrilled for her! You need to have your own life without your kids!

Left as soon as I could and if it wasn't for my parental units I would never go back.
