Not species, sub-species. Meh.

The slaughter of the rhinos is appalling.

The anti-poaching teams have some badasses - they don't play. They'll take poachers out.

Could have been another male rhino that has since died.

I say good riddance. The rhino is a powerful and destructive animal that is not needed in today’s society.
There are plenty of other options if you are into looking at animals. The lovable hippo for instance. All the size of a rhino without the dangerous horn.
The only legitimate reason for having rhino’s anymore is that they are fun to look at.

It's a subspecies. Southern white rhinos are still around in fairly high numbers.

Here's a pic I took a couple days ago. We'd ask the ranger how many they had in their area. Response was, "if you see one, then we have one."

How the hell are you going to “put to sleep” the last male of an entire damn species?

So looks like we may lose the White Rhino while the Black Rhino is serving 105 years in prison by painting.

I would guess habitat destruction is more to blame than poaching. Making hay fields and fencing off large tracks of lands has its drawbacks.

Actually I watched something a few years ago, I guess it was when the second to last rhino died. It was from poaching, this last rhino was actually guarded at all times by multiple armed guards, and they sawed off all his horns so he would be less desirable to poach.
