A RUNAWAY emu which had its legs cuffed by police after running onto a Victorian highway has died.

The bird was “crash-tackled” by a police officer as it tried to run into traffic on the Princes Highway in Newborough on Saturday night.

Locals unsuccessfully tried to round up the emu — which can run at speeds of 48km/hr — before police tried to catch it in their police car.

A plucky police officer then crash-tackled the tiring bird and slapped cuffs onto its legs to stop it kicking out.

“A vet was also on scene to assist but sadly the emu died due to what is be stress from the incident”, a police spokesman said in a statement on Monday.

The officer suffered cuts and bruises.

the newspaper even put the article under the 'law and order' section.... Here's your wtf article of the night

My grandfather farmed emus for decades. They are the dumbest creatures alive, but can absolutely frick you up if they get a good kick in on you.

ETA: Their meat is actually decent, and the eggs are huge/beautiful and delicious.

My uncle got into the Emu breeding market, then it had a bust. Eggs lost a ton of value. I laughed. His arse is stuck with a bunch of these crazy things.

If it had looked like this, it would still be alive.

Not sure how much you talk to him, but their oil was the big dollar value back before my grandfather passed. That's been several years, but might tell him to check into it. They use it to make formulas to treat everything from stretch marks to chronic arthritis. Pretty cool stuff.

Not sure. I just know they are a bit intimidating when you enter his pasture. A lot larger than you are expecting.

How do the eggs compare to chicken eggs? I'm meaning the flavor.

I remember the the emus at that wildlife preserve I think around the Northshore somewhere where you could go feed the animals corn. Forget the name of it. Anyway, those emus were dicks. Stole a popsicle right out of my hands.

What does plucky mean? Did being plucky help him crash-tackle the tiring bird?

I remember being told back in 1990 or so that one day Emu was going to be as popular as chicken to eat.

It was a big thing back then. I'm not sure what happened.

I used to eat emu pies on occasion in Australia. They were decent enough. There were a few emu farms around the town we lived in.

One of my best memories was playing Pokémon on my back porch when I was a kid. An emu walked into the back yard, which made me stunned. I went up to my dad's office and told him there was a six foot bird in our backyard. When he came down it vanished, and he got pissed saying I was interrupting a conference call.

I still stayed on the back porch, and about a minute after my dad went back to his office, the emu walked into the back yard again. I got my dad and again the emu was gone. He got pissed thinking I was talking shite.

Then a third time the emu walked into the yard, and I got my dad again. He came out pissed and the emu had vanished, but this time we had the local farmer in our back yard. My dad asked what he was doing there, and he said to be quiet because his emu escaped and was roaming around our house.

I've heard that, which makes wonder what happened with the market.
