re: Elon Musk offers to buy 100% of Twitter

I think the problem with Twitter is people want it to be this public forum but the character limit all but ensures all conversation devolves down to hurling feces at one another
I believe it will never be a worthwhile product when it comes to fostering the public discourse. The censorship is lame as all hell and has turned Twitter into a political tool and for that they should be called out, but it isn't like it is keeping it from being this excellent platform where great dialogue will prosper.

sorry, worthwhile to society and for the public discourse.
Plenty of things suck for society and have monetary value.

The Verge is already instructing people on how to deactivate their Twitter account.
The people who would deactivate their twitter account because they want to preserve the censorship culture start their own platform.
Then censor everyone they don't like. Call it Censor-media.

Most Twitter users don’t use it often. One study by Pew Research last year found 25% of users make 97% of tweets.

Hear me out on this: you don’t actually have to use Twitter. I know it might seem like everyone else is using it, but you can be the change you want to see in the world. You can just delete your account.
God damn these progressives change foundational beliefs on a dime.

Elon knows how to stay in the news and garner support from all sides. It’s another PR ploy and image pump to keep his “epic” idol status going. He doesn’t give a damn about free speech or any of the things he has people believe that he does.

well obviously people disagree with me
Look, I think Twitter has become a political tool and uses censorship to shape the public opinion by suppressing certain thoughts. On that front, I'm happy Elon is shining a light onto it. I'm just expressing skepticism that the platform would ever offer much to foster a real dialogue even if it enforced its rules fairly because of the character limit. It seems like it fosters memes and shite talking more than anything with substance, and I'm not sure how you change that. That's all I'm saying.

Other takes say they'd be right to reject it because Twttr was at $72 a year ago that they'd be selling low In a suppressed market.
It’s had some very brief days above 70, but the average price over the last year is about $52. Over the last six months the average was $49 but trending down strongly, pre-announcement the price was sub $40 since mid January.

I understand what you’re saying, but there is no character limits on links and you can compose a very long tweet that is broken into multiple tweets.
Is it long-form, essay style debate? No. But it’s is feasible to have substantive discussions on the app. Only right now a large number of non-progressive views are completely silenced.

well I'll state clearly and unambiguously I think that is a rotten business practice with insidious societal goals, and very potentially a practice that opened Twitter up to lawsuits in a fair society once Twitter started inserting itself as a fact-checker and therefore a proxy for the news.
I think we disagree on how the platform will be used, but that's for the market to decide and my predictions ultimately aren't worth much.

Good. The tolerant left is upset they might not be able to ban people who they won’t tolerate

It is kind of funny people believe he’s some free speech idol when he’s fired Tesla employees that have spoken negatively about the company.
I don’t doubt his desire to own Twitter, but his lowball offer makes me believe it’s not a strong desire. Add tonight the mounting lawsuits Tesla faces, and lean to this primarily being PR and market manipulation.

I’d fire people who spoke bad about my company too. Seems like common sense.

Sure, but can you truly be a free speech champion if you fire people for exercising their own free speech?
