spent some time doing maintenance and working on elevators and escalators. Escalators are far more dangerous than elevators. That being said accidents such as ppl getting clothing or shoes caught should never happen. In almost every case when it does its because of poorly maintained equipment or or stuff done on purpose by those maintaining the equipment. On each side of escalator at the top and bottom there multiple devices ( buttons ) you cannot see that will shutdown the escalator if close or shoe lace or anything trips it. You can test this yourself next time you step onto one. Right where the steps come out of the landing or enter the landing give a firm solid kick to the side near the floor. This will shut the whole thing down. Only way to restart it is someone will have to come restart it.

I was stuck on an elevator for a couple of hours. Had cell service so no canonical deal.

You can’t imagine all the random board shite you do. Play with buttons, look for magical hidden buttons. Try to open a door you already know is mechanically locked between floors.
Pry at panels.

The cognitive dissonance at play is interesting. Fairly early on when you are trapped you quickly resolve that you will break this several hundred grand machine to find a way out, as if you deserve it now (even if not bothered by being stuck).

I saved a little girls life by pressing the e-stop when her shoelace got stuck in the escalator. No big deal.

I used to manage operations at a large department store. Had both an elevator and escalator.

Had an associate trapped in the elevator for 2 hours. She had a panic attack and had to be transported to the hospital.

The escalators are blunt force trauma waiting to happen. Those blades have no mercy on human skin during a fall. There is a reason no strollers or buggies are allowed on escalators.

This At a DH Holmes for 12 year-old me. Sumbitch stole my right tennis shoe. Got my foot out before it got pulled in too. It was a down escalator and there were two saleswomen behind the counter at the bottom of it who watched it happen. One of the them took me up to the shoe department and I picked out a pair of green Converse low tops to replace my shoe. The shoe wedged good enough when it got down to the bottom of the escalator to actually force it to stop. I was the shite next week at school with my new dogs.

Can confirm this is true.

Maison Blanche, Lake Forest, 1977.

Escalator edge pulled my sneaker in and wouldn’t let go. Someone shut off the escalator 2 steps before the bottom. Took the escalator apart, threw it in reverse, and pulled by foot out. Crazy to think about almost losing my foot.

There’s no greater fear than being stuck on an escalator if it stops midway between floors.
