It was sort of a problem back in the 50s when I, as a 13 year old rode an old Cushman Eagle to school, around town, all on May-pop tires with no license. There was a dozen of us with varied brands of machines.

The local Marshall warned us regularly about cutting donuts in Mrs. Harper's front yard and attempting jumps in the school yard.

We all got through it and survived (except the marshall who died of old age) without spending any jail time. Of any I keep up with, I don't think there are any neck and face tattoos.

In moderate amounts, this is the stuff that runs through young mens veins and elevates our masculinity to a level that makes us providers and protectors our families if we survive.

Big fight in my Houston suburb as well. The electric scooters are on thing but the motor bikes w/o pedals are crazy.

I saw a JH kid popping wheelies down the road on his at 5:30 rush hour in the afternoon while his friend filmed it last week. Two kids have gotten hit by cars riding to school in the last couple of weeks.

My kids are younger (8 and 6) and for them it’s these electric scooters. It’s the same kind of deal. They go pretty fast some of them 20+ miles per hour and you have a bunch of little kids like this riding them around in the roads where we live. What the HELL is going on?? Somebody is going to get killed. WTF are we doing???

The thin scooters with the long handle bar are a menace, too. I'm dodging kids in the neighborhood every day on bikes and scooters.

I might try to join too

My 13 year old daughter is part of the golf cart gang. It’s pretty much divided with girls on carts and boys on e bikes

The bike's max speed is 28mph but I've gotten it up to 42mph on one of the longer hills

Hmmmmm……….that’s strange. One of these things is not like the other.

Anyone who gets an E-bike to “get exercise” is completely delusional.

You still have to pedal the thing, dummy. It's a pedal bike with an electric motor for assistance, not a mini motorcycle. You can't get the thing up to 28mph without pedaling. The 42 mph top speed is from coasting down a long incline. You know, gravity on a hill.

First, I'm glad to hear kids are playing outside of the house, from reading the OT it would appear all kids do is get dropped off/picked up at school by their parents, then immediately to travel ball/dance practice, then home and in front of a screen the rest of the day.

Yes, these bikes can be unsafe, but its on parents to enforce rules of use, and teach them the rules of road. Second, its a problem of distracted driving and speeding in cars, while it might suck if you have to drive 15-20 mph in your neighborhood, you will have time to react to stupid kids on bikes/scooters.

Otherwise, I don't know how you really deal with it. That said I've spent some time in Asia and they make big cities work with all the scooters, bikes, trucks on the same road, even it appeared like chaos to me.

First things first - get a dashcam. It's only a matter of time before one of these kids gets hurt and you don't want to be the one the parents sue. Facts of the crash are mostly irrelevant if you don't have video evidence.

So I’ll ask more directly. Why would you need a bike with “an electric assist motor” if you use it to “exercise”. And, in your own words, you still “have to pedal it”. Are you handicapped?

Not true. You can pedal an e-bike and get plenty of exercise using the pedal assist.

These are an issue around my workplace. Kids seem to ride mostly on the sidewalks, but will cross the street and turn erratically. No signaling, no warning, and no looking. They just go. They're have been accidents. Honestly surprised there haven't been any fatalities yet (at least that I've heard about).

I've almost killed several kids darting out in front of me on a busy street on these damn things. They are oblivious to traffic laws, think they are invincible.

My 14 year old has a Tuttio. He and his friends ride on streets and paths all over the neighborhood. He is not allowed to leave the neighborhood. Parents long for the 90s when kids had freedom. Stop reminiscing and make it happen. They aren't into drinking or drugs. Let them roam.

My 72 year old dad recently got one
He’s able to go longer distances & likes to brag about how many miles he rode while only using 2% of the battery

I'm not handicapped but apparently you are, 'cause you seem stupid. It's a pedal bike. You have to pedal it. I'm not pedaling my regular mountain bike up and down all the hills at the golf course spot we live in. See, that's where the motor comes in. Pedal up the hill, give it little throttle. I just want to do about 20 miles and sweat a little bit, I ain't training for the Tour de France.

They’re all over SW Florida and FL does not require a driver’s license for them. Driving down the road I’ll get passed by kids on ebikes on the sidewalk.
