His initials say it all: EWE. He charmed the female sheep back in the day and carried their vote.

well considering he had 30-33% of the electorate in lock step with him, he really didn't need that many females to vote for him

He is really a decent guy. Almost anyone would like him if they meet him. Uncle Edward’s was incredibly intelligent, and I think he made his first millions by buying the mineral rights for all the state highways etc dirt cheap as no one knew why he was doing this until he went to oil companies saying I own MR to 1:200 etc of your field etc. I think state of Texas followed suit etc. Everyone now would understand that concept but almost no one did in the 60s.

Don’t blame EE for Louisiana’s issues or political corruption, those issues predate him and continued after him or have you forgotten about characters like Huey Long and Bobby Jindel? The people of Louisiana are to blame. They are the idiots that nominated David Duke too. Huey Long and the Long family, now my damn neighbors started the populist war against wealth that has been part of Louisiana political life ever since.

No he was not nor is a decent guy, yes I met many times. Was he a likeable guy - yes. And EXACTLY WHO did he buy those highway mineral rights from "dirt cheap".......

HIS state constitution - yes it is HIS mess.

and where did all that oil and gas money go? to keep his machine rolling....

I have a very wealthy friend here that tried to expand a business to let’s say New Orleans area from Bama. He told me a little black kid on a bicycle told him weeks into it told him “boss man said 5k if you want a business license” He thought it was totally bullshite so he ignored him until he got turned down for simple business license. Then kid showed up said boss man says 10k now. He was hit up like this constantly so just abandoned the location and the dozens of direct jobs and hundreds of indirect. That was way after EE was gone.

This is a New Orleans thing more than a Louisiana thing, NOLA is very much unlike the rest of the entire state. This has gone on in NO long before us and under recent admins has only gotten worse...... incoming or new businesses getting shaken down from every thing from business licenses, building permits, phantom code violations etc(much like NYC).

I had a girlfriend in high school whose mother claimed he groped her in an elevator. I always dismissed it as a lie because she was ugly as sin.

"Kept his hands off State money"? "Mabe got some kickbacks"? This has to be a joke. No State contract happened without a kickback to EWE or his cronies. Who promptly shared it with him. The State had Texaco by its balls involving its under payment of oil & gas royalties owed the State. Between his second & third terms, the State all but had it locked up,millions of dollars owed. EWE gets back in office, and the State, remarkably, let Texaco settle its suit for pennies on the dollar. Guess whose Texas-sized ranch got a 10' high brick fence built around it? By Texaco? Michael St.Martin, a powerful plaintiff atty in Terrebonne & Lafource Parish, was part of a partnership who got the State's contract to operate the casino in N.O. Guess who was the recipient of millions of dollars in campaign donations? Illegally. We'll never know how much he & his cronies stole from the State. But it is the reason that he & most of his administration's members went to prison. Eventually.

my gf was in law school while I was undergrad at LSU(while EWE was gov.,) EWE was always at law school functions back then, brazenly hitting up on law school chicks, and with some success I'm sure

I don’t remember the year, but EWE wanted a better airplane possibly for use by his son David who like his old man was a pilot, some type of light twin engine. The insurance company that was awarded the contract to insure all State Police vehicles bought the plane.

La had a Lear at one time(or at least at their disposal,) I want to say that a re-election promise of EWE one term was to get rid of it?
