It sure does...Walmart and Kroger and Publix all spend a heap of time being welfare recipients....as do manufactures and producers of products bought through EBT.....

How to beat the system.
1. Have babies, but NEVER get married to the daddy.
2. Claim yourself as single mom with no/low income to get on WIC and Medicaid.
3. Baby daddy lives with you full time, but doesn't claim you or kids on taxes.
4. Baby daddy has job that pays for Netflix, nail salons, car, beer, cigarettes, etc.
They really win with your plan. System defeated. That's a life we all envy.

This isn't anything new. When people who see it everyday bring up the issue they are told they are wrong, racist, etc. The problem is we see what will happen two or three steps down the road. Now here we are

I used to date an old gal in Rome, Georgia (back when Rome was interesting and not the hipster heaven it is today) and her daddy would take their monthly food stamps and buy baby back ribs....the entire months food stamps. He would in turn smoke those ribs until one would have thought they had been delivered by the gods from heaven...they were about as good as you could find anywhere. He would sell about $150 worth of ribs from Kroger for about $1000.
I know of a man in Franklin, Georgia who did the same thing except he did it with pork butts. It is pretty common around Atlanta, or used to be, to find local fish fries on Fridays...some man or woman selling fried fish on the side of the road. They bought those fish with food stamps.
My grandfather was a wanna be gangster in Atlanta back in the 60s and 70s. He owned a bar in the steel mill neighborhood which is now where Atlantic Station is. He bought food stamps for about 10 cents on the dollar so the winos could pay for their drinks in cash. Most of the customers doing this worked for US Steel in Atlanta at the time...making pretty good money for the era. They'd do some serious drinking in that bar at lunch time and then again after lunch....and he would open at 5 am so they could get their fix before work.
Folks gonna game the system. At the end of the day the retail stores that take EBT and the manufacturers and the producers are the ones who enjoy the lions share of the largesse but no one ever considers that...is is all about the trashy recipients, never the trashy producers who would howl like a mashed kitty if the program is cut.

If you're mad about a bag of chips and a coke being bought with your tax dollars, just wait until you hear about how much Northrop Grumman charges for a bolt.

Why does it matter what they use it for? Isn’t there a certain limit to what they can get? I mean they SHOULD use it for good stuff, but if they choose to use it on bull shite then it’s their loss.

Back in the day when they had actual paper food stamps (like monopoly money), I had a couple friends that worked at some convenience stores. They would tell me that the trick back then was for the parents to send in a few kids to buy a 5 cent piece of gum with food stamps and get the other 95 cents back in change. 3 or 4 kids later, the parents then had enough in change to go in and get their pack of Kools and a 40.

I had a boss one time that did that. They got subsidized housing and EBT and he was a manager making decent money. He told me that's why they wouldn't get married, he didn't want to lose the benefits.

I guess, thought EBT was for groceries
I have always said that EBT should be like WIC.
The government gives you a list of food items that we approve you to purchase based on the amount eligible for.
Of course, grocery stores will know what is on these lists and mark up those items on purpose.

If they were restricted a lot of people would lose their soapbox they like to get up on to judge others from.

The goal needs to be getting people off of EBT. Heavily restricting what they're allowed to use it for means they might actually have some incentive to get a fricking job. If taxpayers are forced to fund their grocery bill, taxpayers should have a say in what they're allowed to buy.

Maybe because it would incentivize people to not live on it and actually try to better their lives.

WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children) is a great program. You can only buy specified items - cheese, milk, bread, etc.
Food stamps is basically a preloaded debit card and the only "rules" are basically no hot food and no alcohol/cigs. While I do agree that people in need shouldn't be regulated to cheese and PET evaporated milk, it would be nice if they had a list of specific items they could get that didn't include overpriced 20oz Coca Cola bottles and Snickers bars.
In fact, I would favor the "no hot food" rule being lifted if it allowed people in need to get things like rotisserie chickens for their families.

Hell the guys on the side of the road selling shrimp and crabs out an ice chest have signs that say EBT. It's a gold rush, and it's our gold.
