EBR School Board working to finalize location for new high school in south Baton Rouge

The East Baton Rouge Parish School Board is scheduled to discuss where the school system will construct a new high school in the southeast area of the parish during a meeting Thursday, Dec. 17.

The school board has narrowed the possibilities down to four locations, spread across three current school zones, for where the new school will be built.

One proposed location is near Gardere and Nicholson Drive, the second option is along the Innovative parkway near Burbank Drive, a third is at Perkins Road and Siegen Lane, and the fourth location is Rieger Road near Siegen Lane.

“We’re really trying to see to look at and see what is the best spot for kids and not so much worried about district it’s in,” District 7 school board member Michael Guadet tells WAFB.

He says this decision has been long overdue after the board and parish voters voted back in 2018 on a tax plan to build a new school.

“We really need another public high school down here in the southern part of the parish because we just have students who are riding way too long [far] on busses and crowded at Woodlawn High,” Gaudet says.

The graph below illustrates the distance between the proposed sites and several public schools closest to students in the southeast area.

“We’re trying to really provide them with a quality education and get back to the concept of neighborhood schooling,” Gaudet says.

This is an effort to try to appease the St. George folks, right?

After we ripped this to shreds and ruined all of the decent public schools.

Probably not - they should wait til the city breaks off and St. George can decide where the school goes after they get their own school district

Given the proposed locations, that doesn’t appear to be the intent.

Siegen/Perkins? Where would it go? Nicholson/Gardere means they aren’t trying to get white families back.

If only they had cared about this in the 80s instead of bussing kids across the city and essentially ruining the public schools in BR

Right on top of the old driving range. Open land all the way back, then to the right all the way out to Perkins Road behind Winn Dixie.

There’s a good bit of land that wraps around from Perkins across the street from calandras shopping center to crawfish aquatics on Siegen. Other than that area, there isn’t really any other options

Gardere and Nicholson is by the sewer plant and not in SG.
Someone must want to dump their undeveloped land there by the casino.

Innovative Parkway is not in SG. It’s the old GSRI and that’s a bad section of the parish too.

Perkins at Siegen? Must be down Perkins in one direction or another. I believe that’s SG.

Rieger near Siegen is a Terrible location for a new school. Traffic is bad already. In SG.

Doesn’t that area flood?

You can get away with that shite when it is all grass for a driving range. Not when it is paved over.

Maybe they can buy out the shitty Section 8 apartments next to there for more room.

They're about to cut Rieger out to connect to Pecue near the new interstate exchange.
