EBR Magnet program advice

How difficult is it to get into an EBR Magnet program? My son will attend Pre-K for 2019-2020, but the application period for the magnet program will be in October. I would love for him to attend private school, but unfortunately we can’t afford it. Additionally, we won’t be able to move to any other surrounding parishes as well. I’m curious on parents who has a child in the EBR magnet program for elementary school. How were you able to get your child in? Was it an actual lottery/luck that allowed your child to attend the school? Any advice for me would be greatly appreciated. My top two choices are Westdale Heights or Mayfair Lab.
I understand that there are some people that would recommend not attending EBR schools and I’ve completely understand your concern, but that is the only choice I have. Also, I’m preparing my son to be screened for the gifted program as a backup plan. But I rather wait until he is in Kindergarden to be tested. I want to see how he does in his first year in preschool (schedule, interacting with kids, etc). Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Depends on how attracted they are to him.

Don't rule out BRCVPA (Baton Rouge Center for Visual and Performing Arts), on Acadian. It's an excellent school, too!

Baton Rouge public schools huh? Is he a crip or a blood?

The UHigh principal would like a word with you. Don't wear a wire.

BRCVPA is part of the magnet system.

I understand this line of thinking. It would be best to be tested for gifted earlier rather than later though.

Our daughter attends Westdale Heights Academic Magnet. She was in private school for Pre-K and Pre-School. We applied to the magnet program and was wait listed for a year. She got into WHAM in Kindergarten and its been a great experience as she's now a 4th grader.
We also used the gifted program as a backup, however didn't like the fact that all the gifted programs are inside some EBR schools with questionable environments. Just apply early, and if you don't get in right away, keep at it.

Just do private school or move to Ascension and go to a public school not named Donaldsonville and save a lot of money and your kid will get a high quality education

I'm not understanding how people are using gifted as a backup plan?
Magnet is easier to get in to then gifted.
As far as the testing, wait until at least 1st grade, preferably second grade to have your child tested for gifted. Unless they are a legit genius, you will have a much better chance to qualify getting tested in 2nd grade.

What's the gifted program like in EBR?
Had my 3 year old tested last summer but missed out by 3 points. They told us to bring him back in 6 months to get retested, but in the meantime we put him in a preschool.

We applied ours for the magnet pre-K in October and was waitlisted, so he’s going to catholic school this upcoming school year.
We’re gonna try again next year for Kindergarten. He outta have a better shot because of the many options of schools for kindergarten vs only 2 options for pre-k.
Oh, the pre-k gifted admissions program is rigged AF. If they see on the app that your child already attends a decent daycare, your kid isn’t gonna score “high enough” to be determined gifted....the gifted pre-k is more geared towards low income families.
This was told to us by a EBR gifted teacher...

What will be your first and second choice school if don’t you mind me asking?
Someone told me that it is better to get in the gifted program by the school gifted counselor and not by Pupil Apprasial. It is tougher apparently.

I think proximity zone to school and siblings in the magnet system are big pluses. We tried for several years for Westdale and never got in....didn't get into the Magnet system until Sherwood Middle. Have been thrilled with both Sherwood and now BR Magnet High. You best opportunity to get in is the "freshman" classes of the schools. There is not that but attrition of students year over year.
