We are leaving FLAIM after 2 years. The language is good, but the actual curriculum is really slow. Our 1st grader was really bored. Did same math homework for entire first semester. Discipline is nuts, administration does not like to be challenged, and the PTO is straight up cultish. Have 2nd son in pre-K at Southdowns, really amazing school and faculty. Both are going to BRCVPA next year.

How did you get them to allow you to move to BRCVPA?

Just did the normal magnet app and put it as a first choice. Both boys were accepted, Kindergarten and 2nd grade. Also have twin girls, one got accepted for pre-K-3 at Dufroq, but one didn't, so we have to resolve the both or none scenario.

This wasn’t for any magnet program. It was just for the EBR school system.

I didn’t fill out anything about my income or race beforehand.

They give you your score immediately. The teacher didn’t go over everything he missed. You need a 90 to get in.

Would you have stayed at FLAIM if your oldest didn’t get accepted to BRCVPA?

Gifted is more rigorous but not necessarily better education

try Buchanan elementary , you will have to be with traditional students

magnet can be BRCVPA
middle school is more dicey
sherwood is alright but glasgow and wesdale send the best students to brh

I’m kinda confused about gifted now. I talked to my coworker and she said her daughter is in gifted, but she is making C’s and D’s. Wouldn’t the student be put back in the regular program if the student is performing this low? She said her daughter’s class has 16 students. Does anyone know much about gifted program?

That's one we are eyeing too. We live in Shenandoah Elementary's district so that's where our child will be through 5th grade.

BASIS is really awesome. They adopt the European teaching model, where they have 2 teachers in each class (their primary or "homeroom" teach, and the expert teacher for that subject). And they hired teachers from all over the country, and were very selective about the hires. The math is pretty doggone rigorous, though. But that fortunately hasn't been a problem for junior since his dad's an engineer.

I can tell you about Gifted. Gifted is a Special Education designation. To be considered Gifted you child must be 1.5-2 standard diviations above the average IQ to qualify. Now, there are other qualification methods with the math and reading matrix, but each child has an above average IQ. This doesn’t change based on whether the child is doing poorly in school/on their school work. Their IQ will always be high, just like on the other end of Special Ed, the kid’s IQ will remain the same. They still qualify for services regardless of grades. Once you are Gifted, you will always be Gifted. They can’t put a kid out for grades like Magnet.

A quality that appears in some Gifted kids according to the literature is low performance if they are not interested in a topic or they may shut down based on a variety of factors. Kids fail in Gifted if they don’t do anything, but it is up to the parents to decide to take them out if they want them in an “easier” curriculum. The school will fail a kid and they can repeat grades, be forced to go to summer school, etc.

The Gifted classes will always be smaller than Magnet. It’s state law. I think the elementary number is capped at 18 and middle/high school is 21. Magnet is 35 for middle/high school and just under 30 (can’t remember the exact number) for elementary.

Good school systems don't need magnet schools to prop up their ratings.

This is one of the things we have learned the hard way. We like the school but the limited physical activity has been very hard on my son.

Our son was accepted in the Montessori Magnet program at Dufrocq at age 3. He is now finishing up 5th grade and it has been a very good experience for him. I will admit, the first three years were great, but I am concerned about the future of the program. We did the same thing, magnet with gifted program as a backup plan.

Dufrocq offered traditional, academic magnet and Montessori magnet programs. It was ideal and offered choices for parents. For some reason, they decided to phase out the acaedemic magnet and expand Montessori. School administration leaves a lot to be desired. The teachers our son has had have been great. We meet with them regularly, follow up with his performance and help out where we can in the classroom.

He'll be continuing on the magnet track for middle school and hopefully attend BR High.
