Just goes to show how no tropical system needs to be treated lightly, nor can we fully rely on forecasts.
Certainly hoping we have a very minimal tropical weather season this year.

The Western Hemisphere’s first major hurricane of 2018 is the Eastern Pacific’s Hurricane Aletta. Aletta put on a remarkable display of rapid intensification overnight Thursday, with the winds increasing by 70 mph in just 24 hours. Aletta was merely a tropical storm with 70 mph winds at 11 am EDT Thursday, but by Friday at 11 am, the hurricane had morphed into a fierce Category 4 storm with 140 mph winds. This rapid intensification episode was not well-forecast; the official NHC intensity forecast made at 11 am EDT Thursday called for Aletta to peak with 100 mph winds.

Fortunately, Aletta is located well south of the coast of Mexico, and will not cause any direct impacts to land areas, other than bringing high surf.

The initial advisory had a forecast max of 100 mph, then by the 9:00 am advisory yesterday morning they had lowered the projected max intensity to 85 mph. Less than 24 hrs later it was a roaring 140 mph!
There will probably be a second strong hurricane after this one in the EPAC. That should work to keep the Gulf shut down, despite what the GFS is doing. We'll know in the next couple of days if the GFS is on to something or not.

An active Pacific is often accompanied by a milder Atlantic/Gulf.
