I have a new mattress set being delivered today, thus I have an old king set to get rid of. The box springs are decent, but the mattress is worn out. Do I have any options short of driving 40 minutes to the parish dump?

Put it outside to the road, it will instantly turn into a ghetto trampoline..

When I would move and didnt want the mattress anymore I would just find the nearest apartment complex and throw it in their dumpster.

You don't have bulk item collection days where you live at? We have a set day every month where you can leave out large items(old appliances, mattresses, etc) either out by the curb or in the alley(if you have alley garbage pickup) and city will pick them up and properly dispose of them.

If you live in Baton Rouge then just put it out by the road. It usually only takes a few hours for the scavengers to pass by and haul off anything worthwhile.

Honestly, it's one the most underrated aspects of living in Baton Rouge.

Then again, perhaps the quicker your curbside "donations" are confiscated the more likely you are to live in a sketchy neighborhood.

The deliverymen should take it, but if they won't, tell them them you won't tip them unless they take it.

I live in BR, but my neighborhood seems not to get the collectors through it. I also thought about goodwill, but not sure they want a mattress this worn out.

Seriously this is your best option. The last time I got a new mattress, my old one was put by the road and within 15 mins it was gone.

That's kind of the point of the thread.

BR does have bulk collection days, usually on one if your regular garbage collection days. They take large stuff & appliances that won't fit in the can; just leave it at the curb.

Unless you're worried your neighbors will see the blood/shite/piss stains?

Any decent company that sells and delivers mattresses will take it for free. Make sure you let them know you expected that.

What's the likelihood that the mattress is never used but ends up in the hoarder's yard between the broken washing machine and the pile of scrapped lumber.
