I used ethanol gas very early in my truck’s life, and if I used a 10% ethanol mix I’d see a 10% drop in mpg.

E85 fuel typically results in a lower fuel economy compared to regular gasoline, generally around a 15-27% reduction in miles per gallon. This is because E85, which is 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline, has less energy density per gallon than gasoline, meaning it takes more fuel to travel the same distance.
This is correct. Here are some typical numbers in terms of energy (BTUs) per gallon. The 100% ethanol number is spot on but mixed with gasoline is a guestimate because gasoline is a mixture of hydrocarbons.
Percentage Ethanol: energy content per gallon
100%: 189.3 btu/gallon
85%: 234.0 btu/gallon
15%: 496.0 btu/gallon
10%: 514.4 btu/gallon
0%: 550.6 btu/gallon

It's not bad to run 10% ethanol gas in your outboard or weedeater. It will run just fine. The issue is that your outboard or weedeater are likely to sit for long periods of time, and the ethanol absorbs moisture and gels up. If you drive semi-regularly, it's fine to put in your car. Additionally, modern fuel systems are sealed, except for a small amount of air let through a carbon filter.

my recent Tundra purchase is flex fuel capable but the previous owner and I have never, ever put e85 in it and don't intend to.
Not only is the MPG lower but from what I understand on the Tundra forum you also have to dramatically shorten your oil change intervals from like 5k to 3K miles.
personally I wouldn't touch the stuff except in the most extreme of emergency situations.

Is there a downside to using it? Less fuel mileage, possible engine damage long term?
My truck uses E85.
I've used it a few times. Fuel mileage sucks big time. Like form 19MPG avg to around 11 or 12 MPG avg.

Same for our 2014 Silverado.
I've heard it's bad for the fuel pump and fuel lines. Plus the mileage sucked. So we only used it once or twice.
