you can also be mentally ill and know what you are doing.
you don't sit inside a church for an hour looking the 12 people you are trying to kill in the eyes and converse with them and then still shoot them if you aren't mentally ill. whether it's a personality disorder or some form of psychosis, or possibly a combination, he's some form of psychopath.
eta: this is the issue. so many media and even people on here acting like he can only be one thing. he can only be a terrorist. he can only be racist. he can only be mentally ill. he, and a number of others like him, can be a number of things. it's not black and white, both literally and metaphorically.
