Dubai's Directorate of Civil Defense plans to equip its firefighters with jetpacks to combat fires in the city's notoriously high skyscrapers. On November 9, at the Dubai Air Show the government organization signed a memorandum of understanding with the Martin Aircraft Company for as many as 20 jetpacks. Martin will also supply the Directorate of Civil Defense with two jetpack simulators and lead training courses for the firefighters of Dubai.

"The introduction of Martin Jetpacks into our fleet of emergency response vehicles is another example of how Dubai leads the world," said Lt Col Ali Almutawa at the signing ceremony on Monday. They certainly lead the world in badass firefighting ambitions.

It's the UAE. They have an indoor ski resort in the middle of the desert. They put refrigerated coolant lines in the beach so it doesn't burn your feet and cools the air around it. .

Money is not a concern.

Don't they only fly for like 30 seconds at a time?

I would love to take a vacation to Dubai. The place looks amazing on Google Earth. How safe is it over there for Americans?

If they don't, I want to be there when they find out.

Very, just do not bring any drugs at all. A Jamaican man got 28 years in prison because a marijuana seed was stuck in his shoe.

It's safe as long as:

-You don't go into debt
-You aren't brought in for slave labor
-You aren't caught being promiscuous on the beach

It is safe, but I found it sort of boring. You hang out in hotels or the malls most of the time. If you want to go someplace amazing while in Dubai then check out Al Maha. My wife and I spent one night out there as part of our honeymoon. We had a two bedroom royal suite with a private pool (subtle brag).

It's safe but what's there to do? I like the food and the skyline is amazing. The souk is the only thing worth doing. Not my kind of vacation.

We have several couples that vacation together once a year. I've been trying to make Dubai a future destination. I haven't had much luck. That island shaped like a palm looks amazing.

According to their video on youtube, 30 minute flight time and able to carry a payload of 120 kg (265 lbs).

I'm not really sure how you could use this for firefighting other than spotting people trapped on upper levels. One man with full gear (45 lbs according to the google machine) and you don't have a whole lot of wiggle room. I can't imagine trying to use a fire hose on that thing either; wouldn't the pressure from the hose push you away from the fire?

They did say in can be remote controlled...maybe send the firefighter up to the window and use this thing as a ladder, one person at a time?
