re: Drug TV commercials aren’t made to sell drugs, but to keep the networks quiet

So, why the commercials?

I think it is mutually understood. Sort of like how gun magazines would never say anything bad about Kimber and what a coincidence, Kimber has a full page ad on the back of the magazine each month.
When is the last time you saw a network who airs these commercials ever complete any investigative journalism into any pharmaceutical products? Or the industry as a whole?
So we've gone from the drug reps buy off doctors and the networks are paid to not investigate drugs to suggesting it's "mutually understood" and "I don't remember a lot of coverage? Just trying to follow the metamorphosis of this thread.
I've seen lots of car commercials on TV...when was the last time you saw investigative journalism into car companies!?

They can't even give away pens anymore.
I was going to say... They made giving pens to pharmacies illegal probably 15+ years ago.
Too bad though, I'd be calling every MDs office I could to get patients switched to Jardiance if I could only benefit from a free pen

The drug companies get the doctors in line early, in medical school, by sponsoring educational programs like grand rounds. They are trained to prescribe a pill first line instead of recommending lifestyle modifications.
Absolutely untrue. On both counts.

We must see different doctors.
I haven't ever seen this to be true, that is, when it was something that lifestyle modifications could improve.

Have you ever seen a drug commercial on TV that was immediately followed by a news report talking (in depth) about the pros and cons of that same drug? Really diving into the negative aspects of the drug?
And you never will
And you never will

You know the side effect profiles for these drugs are freely available on the internet? You could just read that instead of relying on a news report.

Why does anyone advertise? Same reason. Many doctors will often prescribe a particular drug if a patient comes in and asks for it by name, it's covered, and it will treat whatever condition they have. There are often many drugs that are indicated for the same thing.
This isn't rocket surgery.

Pharmaceutical commercials are for people to diagnose themselves with something they don't have.

WSJ did a huge piece about Gabapentin.
And then there was the Tylenol thing they did after RFK made his uneducated comments...

It’s really no different. Pick any advertiser you like.
I’m pointing out ads for prescription drugs because 1) unlike cars people
can’t buy them without a prescription and 2) people often wonder why we have so many prescription drug advertisements.

True
And Trump LOVES traditional television and doesn't want be remembered as the President who killed cable TV.
RFK2 wanted to kill big pharma telly ads.

Quoting this for prosperity so we can track how far the goalposts are being moved. They're still in sight, but barely

Every year when I go into my annual physical, my doctor asks me about my diet and exercise. Any weight fluctuations, he asks me if I work out or tells me I need to work out more.
You guys just think everyone is out to screw you over in every facet of your life.

The amazing progress is cancer treatments and increased longevity, even for MBC, is due to targeted, oral chemotherapy agents now on the market.
If you followed this closely and were personally invested ( I am glad you aren't), you would be happy to see those advertisements. They are literally a lifeline.
Let them advertise and let the patient and oncologist decide if it is right for them.

Imagine we find a cure for cancer yet nobody finds out about it because the drug company (who has spent well over a billion dollars in R&D, clinical trials, etc.) doesn't market the medication...
