Video shows drone diving full-speed at topmost platform, full of NYE pyrotechnics

quote:

Video footage confirms that a drone aircraft flew directly at and crashed into the Space Needle's utmost viewing platform on New Year's Eve. The craft, which was subsequently recovered by the staff, was handed over to the Seattle Police Department on Tuesday.

Space Needle representative Dave Mandapat has provided Ars Technica video recovered from the drone, a camera-mounted DJI Inspire 1. The three-minute clip, which includes a few fade-to-black edits, shows the perspective of a craft ascending from an area east of the Seattle Center district (without identifying footage of a takeoff or origin point), then hovering above and around the Space Needle's top platform while pyrotechnic experts arranged and worked on the tower's annual New Year's fireworks show.

Roughly two minutes into the video, the drone shifts perspective to aim its camera view directly at the tower's topmost platform, at which point it apparently flies at an incredibly high speed until ramming into a spotlight. The collision took place mere feet away from both the pyrotechnic experts and their various arrays of electronics and fireworks equipment.

Muslims don't use drones to film fireworks up close, that's as white as letting a dog lick your mouth

I could absolutely see myself or many of my friends pulling a, "hold my beer, watch tthis " while taping roman candles to a drone to shoot at each other.

Suspect seen fleeing the scene. About 30, male, cargo pants, plaid shirt, bushy beard, Seahawks cap, carrying a cup of Starbucks, last seen getting into a Subaru with a bike rack.

Drones have become the new Traxxas nitro T-maxx of the R/C world.

This comment got me thinking about scarily easy it would be the strap explosives to a drone and attack a landmark like this. And it'd probably be near impossible to figure out who did it considering the drone would explode too. Honestly I'm a little surprised it hasn't happened yet. Probably just a matter of time tbh

I've thought about this too. I think payload is the big issue. Personal drones can only carry so much weight. Maybe not enough to cause carnage. Now if the got their hands on an Amazon type drone then who knows.

Looks like they just lost control of it. Certainly wasn't aiming for anything in particular.

Yeah, most likely a fly away.

There are a lot of rich idiots out there though with the inspire line. They just go buy the most expensive one from the most visible brand of drone and then proceed to break all the FAA rules.

700-800 feet flight height, hope they bust the frick out of this idiot.

If my little DJI Mavic Pro hits someone, it will mess them the frick up. Those little blades slice through the skin pretty good. Seeing some of the hand injuries from idiots trying to catch them on landing is pretty gruesome.

The DJI Inspire in this video is a much larger and powerful drone. It could kill someone falling on them from 700 feet easily. It could handle some payload to it too. The newer Inspire 2 is much more powerful, it could probably handle a small military explosive. Not like a pressure cooker one.

Technically he was not breaking altitude rules as he was flying around a structure. Still a terrible idea to fly this way.

If he is flying within part 107. Which would make things much worse for him and his commercial license.

Check out the Griff 300. That sucker can lift 500lbs!

No telling how much that thing will cost though.
