Have you ever seen the little gospel churches in some of these towns? There's a LOT of run-down churches.

Church tiers in a small southern town:

Episcopal. If there's not much old money, a town may not have one of these.

Baptist/Methodist/Presbyterian. Usually not much to separate these. Methodists might be slightly more baller but not always. If he's not Episcopal, the bank president is probably Methodist. The sheriff, DA, judge, or all 3, attend First Baptist.

There's usually one fairly upscale Pentecostal or Assembly of God church.

Below that you've got a scattering of nondenominational churches.

The Catholics, if there are any, are off to one side doing their own thing.

Its kind of like fraternity row.
