My Acura has a monitoring system that tells me how much oil life I have left. Once it hits 15% the light goes off. I usually ride it down to less than 5%

I never change my oil at 3000 miles. More like 6-8k

If your vehicle has an oil life monitor/change oil light, do what it tells you to do and use what is specified in your owners manual.
This is how I do it for the #WhiteWhale

Toyota has a service interval of 5000 miles, but their vehicles aren't known for their reliability.

Interesting since Jiffy Lube was founded in 1979 and the 3000 mile oil change recommendation was around well before that. But believe what you will.
FYI, I do mine every 5K.

You know that is based on mileage/revolutions/etc, right? It doesn't test the oil for breakdown.

On GM vehicles engine temp and number of transmission shifts factor into the equation.

I change mine every 6-7k or so.
Dated a girl once who lived her life insanely "by the book" and would flip out on me when I told her you didn't have to get your oil changed every 3000 miles. She would make plans to hers changed as soon as she hit 2,800 and believed her car would explode if she didn't.
She also was convinced that it's bad for your vehicle to let get lower than a 1/3 tank of gas.
Annoying as hell.

It is bad to habitually run your vehicle below 1/4 tank of gas, because the fuel is the coolant for the fuel system.
Not something I obsess about, but I do go ahead and fill up about the time it gets to 1/4 and before the low fuel light comes on.

Me too. 20,000 on one; 7,500 to 15,000 on the other.

I bought the lifetime oil change for my car from skid marks so I change it every 5k

quote:same here, tire rotation at that point too. I have a mechanic in my shop that does it. I run castrol synthetic and could run longer but the math is is easy at 5k. The jeep's about to 15k so change number 3 is coming up.
FYI, I do mine every 5K.
The jeep said it was time to change the oil around 8k even though I had changed it at 5k. I cleared the computer and waited 'til 10k. Don't know why it came on.

This. And grease all zerk fittings, too. I do all of my maintenance work. That ensures several things: that the work is done correctly (unless you actually mark the filters, how do you know they are changed? You would be surprised...), everything is torqued to spec (once again...), and the correct oil is used (are you SURE they use what you ask for? just sayin...)
Had a good friend who swore up and down that his dealer (er, stealership) was the best until he came back with a leaking oil pan due to overtightening of the drain bolt. They used an impact wrench. They also didn't change his filter - we marked it, and guess what? The same group also left off the oil cap on occasion and other such genius level stuff.

I just add the oil as the engine burns it off. Which unfortunately is more than 5qts every 6000 miles.

The long handed down concept of the 3000 miles oil change was the brain child of Jiffy Lube and propagated by oil industry officials. While it's not exactly a scam per-se, it's quite a lucrative myth for the engine oil maintenance industry.
is this some sort of breaking news?

I thought that most people know this, but it is amazing how many people sitll believe the 3,000 mile myth. I have noticed that these are the same people that think they have to take their vehicle to the dealer for maintenance and repairs.
