Great thread, OP. And your sister seems like she really has it all together. Props to her.

Fun and weird fact about nutria. The females nipples are not on its stomach. They are on its side closer to its back so the young can feed while she is in the water.

A cage like that would be okay short term, but it needs more space and a pond. A few 2x4s, some plywood, and chicken-wire is all you need. I had a nice setup for my baby alligator a few years back.
The borders of the cage need to be sunk about a foot into the ground so it can't dig out or nothing else can dig in to eat him.
Also needs a covered top so no predators can eat him.

My wife just came into the living room to ask me what the step mom said.

I better not let my wife see this it will seal the deal on a damn 5,000 dollar otter her and the kids want. Not to mention the damn pump fed creek I'd have to build in the back yard. Kinda want to build the creek though, maybe she will go for a free nutria.

Yes this is an awesome story...we will be amused by this for quite some time. He might become a mascot of sorts when all is said and done.

So sweet and the dog doesn't seem to mind. Do your parents know yet?

This is by far the best thing that has happened in 2016.
Forget Harambe, long live Tandon the nutria!

just do a raised pen
set four corners with 4x4's and then build the box with open sides with hardware cloth (they can chew thru chicken wire) and a piece of metal panel over the top to keep him out of the rain. Then a door and a ramp
a plastic baby pool set in the ground and you are all set
beware that they are digging somebitches so eventually he will get out
sweet potatoes, root veggies and kitchen vegetable scraps will do him fine

Isn't this the season of giving? I hope that Chicken gets a membership to the jelly of the month club for Christmas.
