Standard election year "lets do something we should have done 10 years ago but we need to motivate the lazy retards to vote us back into office so lets throw them some crumbs now" maneuver.

It seems like we still haven't found the breaking point yet. You and your friend, apparently, still purchased the tickets. Shows and concerts are still selling out across the country. People have to eventually understand that they have all of the power in the equation. Stop buying tickets if you believe the prices (and fees) are outrageous. As long as you continue to buy, they'll continue to jack up the price. A lawsuit really shouldn't even be required.

What was the alternative? Drive to Houston or Dallas and pay even more in tickets and fees and travel?

Can the DOJ look into local power providers?

They basically can charge you whatever they want to and add fees however they choose to

tend to be of the mindset of "if it's more than you want to spend then don't go". No one is forcing you to buy those tickets and pay those fees.

I'm not on Ticketmaster's side at all, but some NFL teams and MLS teams use SeatGeek. So what is the justifiable claim that Ticketmaster has a monopoly?

This is always my thought on the issue. Ticketmaster is terrible, but why aren’t more Artists and venues finding another way? They are to blame as well for letting it get so bad for the fans.

Good job, Ticketmaster.

Why would anyone support monopolies?

You do understand the concept of monopoly, right?

There is no other way. If you don’t want to use TM you can’t use any LN venues. LN owns every major venue, as well as the contractors that can service large acts.

Yea pretty sure I get the gist of it. However, there appears to be numerous other options for online ticket servicing. If other huge companies like StubHub can’t find a way to gain more market share, maybe Ticketmaster’s fee structure is justified. If there’s so much extra margin, what is keeping artists, venues, and other ticket services from undercutting them and making more for themselves?

From the link in the OP, DoJ allegations are:
quote:

Live Nation-Ticketmaster allegedly “captures fees and revenue from concert fans and sponsorship, uses that revenue to lock up artists to exclusive promotion deals, and then uses its powerful cache of live content to sign venues into long term exclusive ticketing deals,

So, in short, they use their control of artists to strong arm venues into using Ticketmaster and they use their control of venues to sign artists.

You don’t have to have 100% control over the market to have antitrust violations.

Agreed, I have never seen or heard much info about exactly what tactics were used to get to this point. I did some Googling and certainly had no idea Live Nation owns about 70% of the top venues and were somehow allowed to merge with Ticketmaster who probably controlled even more of their market.

don't feel bad for anybody who pays $250 in fees to see Taylor Swift or Beyonce perform "country". Consider it a tax on idiocy.

Would you feel the same about $250 fees to catch a game at Wrigley?

I wouldn't be happy about that. But thats never going to happen. Too many seats, too many games, especially too many day games. Now if you only had 1/3 the seats and four homegames per year, yeah the market would support that and we'd be forced to pay it.

But real cubs fans know the fun is in the cheap seats. You go with a bunch of friends and drink some beer and then buzz off later in the game and go to some nearby bars and the fun continues. If they wanted $250/ticket we'd just go straight to Barleycorns or something.

Let’s change this to lsu and I’ll answer…. I’d be pissed. I’d bitch on the rant about them pricing out the little man, and I would likely not go to any games. And if people were still buying tickets and lsu could sustain that, there’s absolutely nothing that would or should change.

This is the correct answer and it's how a lot of football games go. Bears and Notre Dame for example. I know guys that went to ND and if you don't donate big money, you arent' even allowed to buy the expensive tickets, you have to buy them from a reseller. Sometimes their games are good games but I'm not paying that kind of money to watch someone else's team.

They control the ticket sales of moat major concert venues.
You literally can't get around them.

Further, even if you walk up to the ticket booth and buy a ticket in person, you owe the fees.
How is this not seen as a monopoly?
