I don't see how anyone would even begin to know what goes through a dog's mind.

Experimentation and an awareness of what certain brain areas do.

My dog knows the sound of cheese opening. She doesn't have to re "learn" it everyday.

You misunderstand. Episodic memory is the ability to recall events of the past. They can still be conditioned to react (e.g. Pavlov's dogs).

Seems to correlate with MEMORY. I have a fence collar on my dog daily, and if I didn't put it on him tomorrow morning, he would still stay in the yard. He REMEMBERS what happens at the fence line.

I'm gonna ask my dog when I get home if he remembers the score of the Pel's games last night.

Well that sounds like every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning for me in college. So I don't see the big deal.

There is an association with walking past the fence line and getting the shite shocked out of him. That isn't episodic memory. The amygdala handles this function.

if dogs don't remember what happened yesterday how do they remember or recognize anything that has occurred before today?

I hear what you're saying, but conditioning would seem to imply repeat instances in order to develop said reaction.

The vet for example. The dog can be conditioned to a negative response with 3-4 visits over a span of 5-6 years? That seems difficult to believe.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they remember all 5-10 minutes of a singular event. But they have to have "flashes" of memory. They don't remember the whole "episode" (as implied by the article), but they remember important highlights, which means "dogs don't remember what happened yesterday" isn't exactly accurate. IMO.

I also had a dog that was hit by a vehicle. After that one time experience, he would start shaking when we were near the area it happened. Is that conditioning?

That is a fear response by the amygdala.

If a dog doesn't plan for tomorrow, then why do they bury bones in the yard?

Or he remembered he got hit by a fricking vehicle in that location.

You underestimate the power of sub cortex brain areas.

Everything a dog does can be attributed to canine instinct, correct?

Bull shite

My dog remebers. My dog even rembers sounds of certain cars and gets escited or barks depending on who is pulling up before even seeing the car.

When the main mailman comes, she never barks, when the other mail lady comes she goes crazy like she does for the UPS guy.

She has areas on walks were she looks for other dogs when we near friend's houses.
S
You could show me 100 examples saying this, and I will know my dog has a memory.

This too, so many things I see every day that tell me my dog remembers things.
Hel the sound of her leash makes her go crazy, do I have to re-teach her that sound every day/
