In before first "Canine Circumcision" reference.

People take vestigial wolves into their houses and allow the animals to do whatever it pleases and wonder why it becomes problematic.

FTR: The right dogs are wonderful.

no he doesnt. I love his show. He shows his dominance to become the pack leader but not by holding a dog down.

I've seen him hold a dog on its back in at least one episode. It was several years ago. Pretty sure the dog had some aggression issues. He took it in the family's garage and held it down. Told them it was going to put up a fight but not to react to it.

Here is a link to a pitbull he had to do it to: LINK

This dog was aggressive to other dogs, but I've seen him have to muzzle a dog that was aggressive to people before doing it.

ETA: But he doesn't choke the crap out of the dog. He just gets it on its back and puts his hand on its neck (like a dog would do with its mouth) and hold it there until it surrenders.

I love boxers, and have a couple of them. Wonderful family dog if that's all you are looking for. My Dogos though take the cake. Awesome family dogs, but still able to take down just about anything. When you can see first hand a dog tactfully think through a situation, and follow through with it is something all in its own.

By the way..... The op is probably getting the "lock up" right now. He is learning what alpha means.

Damn, this thread is still going. Been busy at work so I have not had a chance to see the dog in a couple of days. I talked to my g/f yesterday and I told her my plan. She said that the dog will not let me hold him down but he will let her. Next thing I hear is a growl through the phone and my g/f shouting. I asked what happened and she said she was holding him down on his back for 5 seconds and he "nipped her on the forearm". I said "he bite you". She said nip. We went back in forth over this term and she was getting upset. She knows I grew up in the country and I am much more harsh then she is. When a dog bites the next step is a bullet in the head but again this is not my dog. She sent me a picture and her forearm is red but there is no blood. I guess he was just struggling to get up and nipped her. This morning the dog did to her exactly what he has been doing to me. Would not come back to the house when she called him. She had to chase him now.

Going over there tomorrow while my g/f is at work. Will hold his arse down and make him summit. Then take him for a walk and make him walk in the middle of the street not sniffing anything. He will be downwind of me smelling my high protein diet. Probably will do the staring contest later that night and take his feeding bowl away during feeding time. All great suggestions that are non-violent.

Like I said in the first post. This is not my dog. I'm all for smacking around a dog when the time calls for it. My first initial response was to smack this dog but I'm glad I did not do this in front of my g/f. I don't want her to think I have anger issues. She has seen me blow up after watching football games. Doing these other methods will show her I'm the loving, caring, and patient type.

Damn. A fricking dog is running that house.

Obviously I'm an alpha, but a beta friend of mine has been looking for a solution to a similar scenario.

"Will hold his arse down and make him summit."

Kinky. Is that the same as climax? I was held down and made to summit once and it did wonders for my aggression.

But really though, all of these suggestions are dumb. The easiest way to establish dominance in that situation is to make your GF walk 2-3 steps behind you at all times. You need to take a nightly stroll through the neighborhood (all 3 of you together). You in front. GF next in line. The Chow is last. You will need to fabricate a special collar that has sharp 2P finish nails protruding from the inside torwards his neck. Attatch a pole to a belt on your GFs waist to the collar. It should be approx. 4 feet long. The dog will naturally try to pass her and you into the "lead" position but every time he moves right or left, the nails will poke into his neck causing discomfort. The pole and collar assures that he remains in his spot which is 3rd in line. Occasionally, have your GF feign like she is moving in front of you and do the fake slap across the face and have her do a good job of acting like you really smacked her good. Make sure you sell the action and I can't stress how crucial it is to make the loud slap noise as your feigned slapping hand hits your other hand held inches away from her cheek. The sound is the key more so than the submission because you will soon be able to control him by just slapping your hands right in front of his snout. Soon, the Chow Devil will know that the hierarchy of that devils den of sin you are living in is 1.you 2.GF 3.him. Good luck

I only take him outside if he has the leash on him. This sucks. I really liked the old system we had. Any suggestions on to deal with this?

My little mutt used to pull the same shite on me. An air soft pistol (low power) shot in the meaty part of his hind quarters ended that BS quick. Only had to pop him once. Next day, all i had to do was point it at him, after that i didnt even need the toy, just the ole thumb and index finger.
of course, you need to pair the shot with a simple, one - word command (STOP), and keep same voice command as you step down the physical component.

AND

I will clarify - Air soft gun, with the plastic beads. NOT an air gun with metal bbs or pellets. Do not aim above the shoulder/ under the tail.

Chows are just all around shitty dogs. Never heard of one that hadn't bit at least one person. I had one bite me when I was little and I tried to pet it

Honestly, I've had three dogs, 105lbs, 90lbs and 80lbs, and never did the positive reinforcement bullshite work on them. It wasn't till I acted harshly(flipped them over and held them or actually struck them), at the appropriate time that they assumed beta.

Yup. Simple is this. My pit is beta as frick.
