I have a 5 month old dachshund. I take the fricker outside every 3-4 hours when I'm home. Tonight, I took him out at 9:30, about two hours ago. Just now, the little arse got on the bed, sniffed around and pissed. The second time in the past week I will be up until 2-3 am washing sheets because of this dog. I really don't understand how a 5 month old dog can't hold his bladder longer than 2-3 hours.
Any suggestions?

taking a 5 month old dachshund out once every 3-4 hours is probably not enough. I would take it out every 2 hours. You can also train it to just pee outside, worked for mine.

shouldn't be in the bed with you for awhile. you need to crate train your dog.

Do people not paper train their dogs anymore??

Put some newspaper down in your living room and piss on it to show him where he needs to go if he's gonna piss in your house

Get some of those dog pads with the attractant for inside in case he needs to go.

Have you ever been on a trip, stopped for gas, got back on the road and 5 minutes later have to piss?

I tried that. It worked when I was in a smaller one bedroom apartment. Now that I moved and am in one more than twice as big, he doesn't use them. I had like 7 out around the place the other day and he still missed. Dog is fricking evil

Sorry, mis-fingered (heyooo) a downvote in an intentional attempt an an upvote. Your user name has more truth here than not.
But seriously, paper training is no longer a thing?
Has always worked for all of my weims. Never had a problem minus a rare few occasions when it was usually 'user error' when I was gone for > 7-8 hours due to work or training, etc

I've never had much luck with male dogs in the house. When they get older and start lifting their leg, they never hit the pad...usually it's the wall next to the pad. Someone would have to be home with him all day, everyday, to train him to scratch on the door when he needs go. If there is no one home during the day, you can't expect him to hold it all day.

Dachshunds are notoriously bad for house breaking. (This is some research you should have done in advance). Crating is best. Don't do the pee pads. He needs to learn outside is the only acceptable place to pee or poop.

This will be a long process because you didn't get a golden. My apologies. Stay with it and keep a consistent approach. The dog isn't dumb or evil. He/she just needs a lot of work.

Dachshunds are among the worst at training to use the restroom outside. Ours was about 2 before she fully got it.

At 4 months old you need to take the dog out every 1 to 2 hours. There is info on the net about puppies age/bladder fullness. I did it around the clock with our doxie mix and rarely had an accident.

Sykes mini naturals treats, 1 every time he does his business outside. It works. I buy they at Rouses.
