Dachshunds are notoriously bad for house breaking
I didn't know that, but I've never owned one.

Don't do the pee pads. He needs to learn outside is the only acceptable place to pee or poop.
Even if no one is home all day to take him outside? We can just agree to disagree on that one. I can only imagine the agony if I could only use the bathroom until someone allowed me to. When you have to go, you have to go.

Dogs instinctually don't like to defecate where they sleep or eat. Crating makes them learn to hold it. We have had two goldens. One was raised outdoors but could come in the house and sleep when needed. She never had an accident in the house. When she passed we got a male golden puppy. He had a few challenges the first week and even pooped in his crate one time. After that it was done. The crate went away at 4 months and he was done with training. I only know about dachshunds because the breeder who sold us our dog raised both. She said some never become reliably house broken ever. She loves both breeds though.

At 5 months of age, he can hold his bladder approximately 5 hours.
However, if you leave water out all day and he drinks it or is playing a lot, this could shorten his length of time that he can hold it.

No disrespect to you, but I couldn't crate a dog. I could crate my wife, but not a dog.

I thought it was an obvious joke for the person that downvoted. I'm sorry if I offended you.

Dachshunds are notorious for hard to potty train. As a child, mine just "ran away" one day. 30 years later, I figured it out. Good luck. Stubborn little bastards.
