I work for a Boston based company and have been approached about moving to HQ. It looks like I'd need a 30% raise just to hold steady.
Do they offer an increase in base salry to offset the cost of living? I think they give us +6%

I'm in a good position with my house in Houston, its appreciated something like 30% since we bought it, or at least it had before oil took a shite. So that gives me a head start on affording a more expensive place up there.

I've also heard Mass. refered to as "Taxachusetts" and it makes me nervous about I'm in for if I do go up there

I loved living in Boston. You can always live in one of the smaller towns and commute in. They have great public transportation. I lived in Winthrop and worked in Boston. Blue line to the Orange line.

Yes. It's extremely expensive and miserable for 8 months of the year. Most commutes are long since the highways are mostly 2 and 3 lane, and the T tends to have reliability issues (especially in winter months). Are you thinking about living in Boston or a suburb?

you're going to need a cost of living increase. It's stupid expensive to rent/buy here.

Once you get over the initial sticker shock, there is something to do on every corner, and you can walk or take the T to just about everything. I havent started up my truck once since I moved, it just stays parked, so that's nice, really no monthly gasoline bill.

depends on where your office is and how it relates to the nearest T station

however, there are very, very, very few..if any attractive females, which is probably why there are bars on every corner

A suburb I guess. I'd love to live in closer to the city, but I'd have to rent, and frick that. I don't rent anymore.

Office in Waltham and I'd be looking to live somewhere west of that. Maybe Framingham or Marlborough? I have no idea if these are shitholes or nice.

It's actually pretty great man. A hell of a lot cleaner than anywhere down south. The weather is a little shitty but summer is awesome. Don't listen to most of the shite heads on here who've never traveled outside of the state.
A lot of posters on here think if you can't spotlight deer, a place is shitty to live. It is a little expensive though.

So if you wanted to get out of town how far do the trains take you?

Like if I lived in Worchester or something like that, could I take a few trains all the way into down town?

I've been quite a few times on business, and I always liked what I saw. But I never had to spend much time there.
There are a few guys I work with that grew up there and they swear it is a hell hole. That throws me off a little, but I grew up in BR and if any one asks me about it, I call it a hell hole too.

No, it does not suck. Look up the commuter rail that runs west to east. Not sure how far out it is.

Boston is a tremendous place to live. Homes/rent is expensive, for sure. But don't listen to the idiots who say it's miserable 8 months out of the year. It's not that fricking bad. Some winters you get a ton of snow, and that sucks, but some winters there is none.

And the people who say the women don't look good are stupid. Plenty, plenty of good looking women.

From Rhode Island up to Maine, there is a ton of shite to do. You should come visit here in like May. You will love it.

yep, you can take the commuter rail all the way into south station, and you're 1 train away from pretty much anything. Worchester is the end of the line for that rail.

Boston sports fans are the Gumps of the North. This is common knowledge.
I revel in there sorrow anytime one of their beloved teams dosn't win the championship they think they deserve every year

I just don't get why this is (you're like the fourth person in this thread to say it). Boston is a major university town. It has a ton of young people. Its East Coast peers (NYC and DC) are over-flowing with talent.

What gives?

It's a big perk about living in Chicago. There are tons and tons of good-looking girls here. There are maybe only two or three other cities in America in which I'd rather be single.

I may have a recency bias because of last year's winter.

Still, it's not pretty for most of the year - summer is gorgeous, for sure, but that's basically May through August. The rest of the year is cold and grey. As between Boston and most southern cities, I would take the latter in a heartbeat.

OP, what city are you moving from? Unless it's NYC or SF, you'll probably need a 50%+ cost-of-living adjustment to make up for higher priced everything (especially real estate). And don't expect to get the same quality for the price.

That really blows my mind.

I know its not the same scale at all distance wise, but that sounds like a train that would run from Laffy, thru BR and into NOLA.
