Yes it works. It restricts the hours you eat to a window daily whichever schedule works for you. What this does is allow one to eat larger meals and more satisfiying meals as long as macro and calorie needs are met.

Work for what?

You need to spell out what you're trying to achieve.

I've literally tried every diet imaginable, and the one that is invariably successful is eating whatever, but at a deficit. I shoot for 1750-1900 calories a day and the weight falls off.

So if your feeding window is say 12-6, does this really just mean you're skipping breakfast?

Maybe.
But you have to watch the caloric intake.

Yeah, it works. I've lost 20 pounds in less than 3 months. There are different fasting regiments. I'm fasting 3 days a week (Tues., Thurs. and Sat.). Eat normal meals the other 4 days. No need to exclude carbs. Very little exercise. I'm retired, so I don't have work to deal with.

My wife is just fasting 16 hours, from 6 PM to noon. She eats a normal lunch and supper. She's lost 10 pounds.

Fasting for 8-10 hours or so exhausts the glycogen in your system and then you burn fat for the remaining 16 hours of the fast.

After I lose another 20 pounds my eating schedule will probably morph into the 16 hour fast for 3 to 5 days a week. It's easier than counting calories and there may be other benefits.

Google Mark Matson's TED talk and the "Scientific American" article on Intermittent fasting.

Yes it does.

Essentially yes, but it's all about your bodies' various stages of digestion/absorption/etc. By eating you turn those things on, so an early breakfast does that. By not eating, your body shifts into a fasting mode. It's fairly technical, but it makes sense.

it's not a magical system that tricks your body into burning more energy. Essentially the way it works for most people is by making it easier to remain in a caloric deficit, but it works well for a lot of people. At the end of the day meal frequency has little to no effect on metabolism, so whatever makes it the easiest for you to hit your TDEE and macro goals is what you should do.

When it comes to fasted training, things get more complicated, and unless you're already at like 10% body fat and trying to go lower, I do not recommend it.

Yes it helps.

The formula is simple. Eat less and exercise. Do that and you will lose wait. Continue to work out and it's easy to keep the weight off. Fad diets will help you lose weight, but after eating cabbage soup for a year, you will change eating habits and regain weight.

If his goal is to gain, no I don't see how fasting will help.

It's intermittent. You still eat 8 hrs a day. You cram enough calories into that window and you will gain.

I think it works for people because the restricted eating window doesn't allow them to consume the same amount of calories they were consuming regularly.

The point of it IS to consume the same amount of calories but within a window. If people were consuming less calories then the weight loss wouldn't be attributed to only IF. The whole point of IF is to cut fat but maintain as much mass as possible.

That depends on how fat you are. But 15 lbs would be a stretch.

I did it for a year and lost 50 pounds. Either an 18-6 window or 24-0 window. It works. The thing is a lot of people think they can eat whatever they want as long as they do intermittent fasting. No. It doesn't work that way. You might be able to lose some weight by doing that, but you will stall quickly. You still have to count your calories and macros and work out.

The main benefit of intermittent fasting isn't even the weight loss, its the increased production of HGH. HGH is what really leads to becoming lean and adding muscle mass.
