re: Does Anyone Live Near An Elks Lodge That Does Anything For The Community?

My parents were Elks at the Baton Rouge 490 lodge. My father was the 1987 Louisiana Elks president.

490 lodge is defunct due to low membership.

Elks hold annual boys and girls Hoop Shoot free throw contests which provides national winners with scholarship prizes.

Elks serve the Military Veterans by donating goods and clothes to the veterans home.

Elks hold dances and fish frys at many locations across the country.

Members of Elks can take advantage of discount lodging when traveling through other states.

Many locations have bingo games and other get togethers.

This is done at the American Legion in my area. They also had the "American Legion Baseball League". I think there were several age brackets and was a pretty active deal at one point, but now.. The American Legion holds Bingo one night a week, have dances for New Years I think.. And I think they do something for the Vets, but the Elks club activities are dead.

They do, and the national chapter has founded several charities to help vets, kids, etc, but your suspicions were correct in that most of these local lodges are just keeping their own head above water due to the changing times. As a non-profit they have to do community outreach with at least a certain percentage of their budget, it's just for the majority of these places that budget is supported by the drinking habit of people who would turn around and walk out of a bar if they heard a miller light cost more than two dollars there.

I've always planned to be The Grand Poobah of The Water Buffalo's when I become an adult. I'm only 41 so there is still time.

I was there last Saturday. It's an old but nice pool with 2 bars, pavilions, and gas grills. If I had one near my house Id be there every weekend with the family drinking cold beer and leting the kids swim.

I honestly don't know what they do for the folks of Iberville parish. I would say chicken spaghetti but that a lion's club/knights of Columbus type of thing
