Long story short, someone mentioned something about "Woodmen of the world", which I never heard of, which is something I should have evidently been aware of. Anyway, so the conversation went into talking about The American Legion, Elks, etc.

I am asking about the Elks in particular because I live relatively close to one and pass by it every day. Every once in awhile, someone has a wedding there and maybe once or twice a year I see it being used as a location for people to pick up dinners (like if a local baseball team needs to raise money or something).

It is an old building so I assume it is paid for already. But with the few events they have their annually, after paying for utilities and insurance, I can't see that it generates much money. I never heard of someone joining the Elks club.. Does anyone live in an area where the Elks club is active? Or are is it some non-profit group that is pretty much dying out?

The entire first paragraph is unnecessary.

I think all of those organizations were established when divorces were taboo and men needed an excuse to get away from their wives.

At what age is a deer considered an elk anyway?

I grew up near one that has a lake, a pool, campground/pavilions, and a large lodge with a bar where they or others host events. It's basically a redneck country club. You pay dues to upkeep the property and a bit goes to charity. I don't know anything about them in other states, but I'd imagine most have a bar attached and that's the motivation, members only watering hole.

In the town where I grew up there was an elks lodge with a swimming pool that was the absolute tits. I spent many a midsummer's day as a lad drinking cherry coke, doing dives off the high dive, and scoping out the babes and milfs.

We have an active elks lodge. Local 420

They do some stuff for the community, not as visible as the moose or the lions though.

I live close to one. Their air conditioning went out last month so now I just drink at the Legion.

This is most likely true, but in the last twenty years or so they've allowed wives to join, likely because the government threatened their tax exempt status.

In true American fashion they've adapted, and the place is now a thriving hub of conservative down-low swinging.

There's an Elks Lodge in Pensacola Beach, on the right just after the toll booth. I passed it this week and thought, those guys have a nice crib. How do I join?

There's one on Okaloosa island and on the bay that probably covers id day at least 2 acres of bayfront, that land is probably worth $2 mil or more. You could build a good sized hotel on it.

My grandparents are in their 80s and they go to their local Elks in Illinois probably 3 times a week. Those clubs were all established after WW2 and a good place for working class men to have a beer or 12. Theyare dirt cheap like $2 beers and $3-4 well liquors, they have dinners a couple of nights a week like pizza dinner for $2/ slice or something.

If you live in the heart of the country with nothing else to do, they are a solid place to socialize. It's sad that working class people are now looked at as trashy.

The Elks suck in comparison to the International Loyal Order of Friendly Racoons.

A deer doesn't become an elk at a certain age.
They're different species of the same family (Cervidae).

Elk (Cervus canadensis)

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus)

The one's I've seen are shabby and barely getting by. I wish these organizations were more active. It sounds more respectable than just saying you're going to the bar.

The Elks Lodge here has a big Easter thing where they give away bikes but other than that you don't hear much about them.
