But yeah, BR has seen better days. It's been on a pretty steady decline for the past 10-15 years.
While traffic is still bad, major road construction projects were started and finished during that time (I-10, Essen, etc), restaurants are better now, Goodwood and Downtown libraries were built, mid city has been on the upswing, the downtown theater is undergoing a massive renovation, and I’m sure a host of other things I’m forgetting at the moment.
The only thing I can think of that has slid is the live music scene, but Covid was a killer for that.
But even with that said, I find Baton Rouge to be a more interesting place to live now than when I moved here from Lafayette a little over 15 years ago.

I enjoy living here, but have now read 26 pages and still haven't read anything that will help me plan my evening for a date with my wife. No LSU football or baseball games tonight, so I'm at a loss.
There's decent eating and live music options all around this metro area. There's also Top Golf, bowling alleys, a couple of arcade/game places, hiking/biking trails, breweries, axe throwing, ziplining, and so on. You can even swim with fricking otters around here. People are cynical cockmonkeys and tickle each other's taints by bashing Baton Rouge.
The OT will shite on any city that's not fancy with upscale restaurants, rooftop bars, multiple pro sports teams and cozy amphitheaters for the trendy hipster band of the week to sell them out.
Baton Roue ain't got that shite.
But Hey, Remmetter is re-opening Chelsea's at a new locations, 1010 Nicholson. Speaking of trendy hipster bands. That will be pretty cool.

Baton Rouge is what you make it. You either found your niche areas with go to spots and friends nearby or you just deal with it and bitch. Life is short. If you have to be here (like me) then just enjoy it and travel.
And frick living in New Orleans. The crime will never be better

I keep intending to do that, and then keep forgetting…

You and me both. My youngest kid would absolutely LOVE that shite.

My memories of BR go back to like the mid 80s. Once nice or at least decent areas are shite now. It seems like with each passing decade the nice areas shrink and the ghetto areas expand.
I'm not a regular BR basher because I think it's fairly overblown on the OT. Plenty of people live perfectly decent lives here.

Yet you’re on record numerous times on here saying how bad you want to leave LA and can’t wait to move. Which is it?

I think the BR bashing on the OT has always been overblown but I hate the weather and terrain in South Louisiana and most of my family and friends don't live around here anymore.

They just shift. Nice middle class neighborhoods get old and run down. Older areas get rejuvenated. Twenty years ago, Sherwood was nice and mid city was shite. Now it’s the opposite.

It has nothing to do with the metro areas…. BR proper itself is a shithole yet you defend it but won’t live in it…
I won’t live in any city proper to be fair. I mean as far as a city to work in and visit as your primary go to for things. Houston proper has some very nice areas but I still won’t live there either.

I’d say come on over to the Northshore but we’re full, sorry.

I feel like the areas that are becoming more rundown vastly outnumber those that are improving.
Historically the crime was mostly concentrated north of Florida Blvd and you just avoided that side of town and you were good. I remember when this wasn't even the case too.
But now it's all over the city just about. Shootings on College, O'Neal, Siegen, Coursey or places like that were very rare up until the past 10-15 years. This makes normal law abiding people uneasy and they start to leave and the problem gets worse.

Spot on.
It’s just gotten so bad, especially within the last 18 months or so.

Reading a news headline about a murder on Chippewa wasn't all that unusual 25 years ago either. Most middle class people would think to themselves that I'm never in that area anyway.
Lately we've had murders in the Target parking lot, Fairway View and other fairly historically crime free areas. It's certainly a problem.

The lady that was shot to death in her parking lot in Sherwood is still unsolved. I can’t believe they have the a-hole on surveillance and couldn’t get a plate number in the process with all the homes surrounding the perps location with surveillance cams everywhere.
Posted on 7/10/21 at 3:16 pm to Breauxsif
Yeah, that one was particularly concerning because it was seemingly a law abiding, decent person who got murdered in her driveway.
