I feel like growing up and living in BR for 26 years gives me a bit of an insight into the city from more than just “afar”, but that’s just me. Although I get your point.

Decent public schools great public schools in next parish
Neighborhoods safe from property crime no crime in ascension/Livingston

A police department that investigates violent crime and property crime incompetent leaders will have a walk on the subject
Comprehensive road grid yeah, leave 5 minutes earlier for work
Bridges over Bayou Manchac build one
Bridges over the Amite River build one
Bridges over Bayou Fountain wherever this is?
At least one bridge over the Mississippi we have 4 bridges withibn 20 miles of BR
Decent bar/music scene for young professionals ..plenty of bars
Mountains can't change topography
Beaches same
Days without rain wtf
Days without rain when it is comfortable to be outside
Major league baseball yawn
Hockey of any kind double yawn- kingfish were fun for about 2 months.
Hiking trails where you won’t get mugged walk around the lakes
Walking trails where you won’t get abducted and murdered by a serial killer same, just don't talk to anyone named Derrick
Sidewalks
Overpasses ???
Bike trails too hot to ride a bike hippie
Bike lanes see above
Breweries that don’t suck drink German beer the way Jesus intended
A decent zoo got one
An aquarium why?? homeless fish?
A competently run amusement park
A michilen GUIDE restaurant so you're a fatass?
A James Beard award winning restaurant just eat a light salad.
Bars where people don’t routinely fight in the parking lot stay away from Bogies
Live music that isn’t cover bands
Open container laws that aren’t enforced
Competent mass transit I thought you were biking everywhere?
Population density
Korean BBQ no thanks
Decent BBQ in general
Jambalaya that doesn’t taste like crap
Po’boys with the right bread and bread to protein ratio now you are just getting too picky
Cohesive, attractive architecture (outside of a very few old neighborhoods)
Suburbs that don’t flood my house in the burbs did not flood- hint-don't live close to a river and have good drainage
White collar jobs

I find BR to lack a lot of things, but this list is just stupid. Mountains??

Someone asked for what BR doesn’t have that some people may want in another city, and it doesn't have those things. Like I said, people make outrageous comparisons between BR and cities that are much larger or geographically completely different. BR actually is pretty nice compared to its peers like Little Rock, Galveston, Corpus Christie, Jackson, Montgomery, Birmingham, etc. it’s obviously lacking compared to much larger cities like Austin, Nashville, and Tampa.

It doesn’t need those things, necessarily outside of those infrastructure problems. I laugh at your “leave 5 minutes earlier” response. Without traffic, my house is 35 minutes flat from downtown. On good days, it takes 45 minutes during rush hour, some times it takes 2 hours. There are multiple unnecessary choke points within the city and not enough redundancy in the surface streets in the southern and eastern halves of the city to deal with the traffic counts. That is a legitimate greivance.

There are many legitimate fixable grievances, and that is what is so frustrating. The government of the city, along with half its population, doesn’t give one flying f$&k about fixing those problems. All they want to do is steal from the rest of town. They would rather have all of $100 than 5% of $1 million.

I see what you’re saying. All of the local bands who play around BR regularly are cover bands. But one positive I might add is the Varsity. They get damn good shows year round. Outside of Nola, no other place in the state gets anything close to what the varsity gets. I’ll give them that.

Exactly. A lot of it is simple stuff that people take for granted like clean streets, well-maintained medians and public spaces, better infrastructure, fewer ugly billboards, not having an abundance of shopping carts at every public transit stop, etc. Just an overall feeling that people care about where they live.

I’m interested to see what kinds of acts the Spanish Moon will be getting once it finally reopens post renovations. It was bought out by The Republic.

FYI: most of Baton rouge’s live original rock bands will be playing at some point this Saturday at Bloom Fest downtown. Tickets are $10. My band plays at noon. /ShamelessPlug:

I would move away if offered a job in a city with a better climate or better opportunities. I just haven’t had much luck with that so far. I was absolutely devestated when I made the second round of interviews on jobs in Denver, L.A., and San diego and didn’t get any of them. I also really don’t want to go to Houston, Dallas, or Atlanta as I really don’t care much for those cities, and am wary of going to the Great Lakes cities due to the brutal winters. I’d take west coast, Austin, Nashville, coastal florida/alabama, or Colorado in a heartbeat, though.

It's not accurate at all. And most of that shite happens every where in the country.

Neighborhoods that don't flood? I mean, Houston, Nola, new york are some big cities that had neighborhoods that flooded.

Every where has nature that can frick you. Mountains? Constant threat of fires in the summer.

I've never been mugged in br walking around in the city or at any park. Does it happen? Yes. But it happens every where. Just scroll the news. The stupid 9pm cerfuw for men wasn't made just because of baton rouge.

Baton rouge was on the rise and has gone down hill when it seemed promising. But most of the hate is complete bullshite.

Traffic is bad, but it's bad in a lot of cities. I lived and worked in BR. Never used the interstate for work, never had issues getting around. Never.

Birmingham in no way resembles Jackson, MS. The comparison is laughable.

There are certain “walls” in this city at different times of the day. If one lives, works, and sends their kids to school on the same side of those walls, their life can be pretty great. However, having to cross too many walls to accomplish one’s daily routines can be a real grind.

For a few years there, my commute was pretty damn good, and life was great. Now, my commute sucks and my life is terrible. The traffic is so bad that one’s perception of BR as a whole largely depends on how much of it they run into in their daily lives.

Your comparison is way off, the Baton Rouge metro area is similar in size to Nashville and Austin, and is 3 to 12 times larger than any of the cites you indicate it is comparable too.

That's right, great food and cheap drinks too.

I'll probably stop in for a bit this evening to enjoy the slightly cooler weather in the back patio.

Nashville’s is just shy of 2 million people, tampa nearly 3 million, and Austin’s is just over 2 million.
BR’s metro is 800k.
Corpus is 400k
Jackson just under 600k
Little Rock is 700k
