Yes, I saw him at the "Cow Palace" as he called the John Parker Coliseum at LSU.

I was reading once how he would take walks at night through fairly rough areas when he would travel. The author, I think it was Maurice Zolotow, took one with him and was pretty apprehensive. No entourage or bodyguards. Said it was amazing how many rough characters would stop what they were doing and come greet him.
