Your wife is right, I worked the “to-go” line at the Chimes and dealt with the Varsity concert tickets for my tirst year. I made sure everything was good to go, had people walking up, sold T-shirts, concert tickets, etc. and made sure people I was dealing with were the most important, than phone calls. (I politely asked them them to hold)
Eta: And got the To-Go orders bagged and ready

Waiters and waitresses get paid $2.13/hr, so tips are their income and is expected for satisfactory service.
Counter workers and kitchen help are paid AT LEAST minimum wage, which is 3-4 times that of the waitress. They are be compensated for the work that they do by their employer. Tipping is ridiculous in this country. I don't tip the cashier at the gas station, the McDonald's drive-thru person, or the take out cashier at a restaurant.

Yes. I never know if they're getting fricked by being at that counter and I don't want to ruin their day even more, especially if they're nice and seem to somewhat care.

Do you know that servers do not get paid minimum wage?
They are paid like 2 an hour.
They depend on tips for income.
Do you know why this is?? Do you know what this does?
It allows the restaurant to keep YOUR FOOD COST down.
People like you suck. Ignorant for sure. The food cost is made affordable and your server is incentivized to provide you with good service.
It seems like are angry because your bathroom patrons don't tip you enough after they take a shite and you hand them a paper towel and a mint.
Your post does nothing but reveal you as a poor, or a paycheck to paycheck lower middle class.

The service industry pays below minimum wage because of tips. If you have a problem with tipping a few dollars for take out, stick to fast food...they aren't making below minimum wage.
