Also I do not see Stalin staying in power if the Germans take Moscow. He would either die fighting in Moscow or more likely, be killed by Beria or somebody like that. This would cause a fraction within the government and civil war would result.
I think that’s entirely possible. I believe had the Germans took and held Moscow more than likely the tenant of the Soviet government would have fled east of the Ural Mountains and sued for peace or perhaps tried to sustain some sort of insurgency in German occupied Russia.

Not really. The key in 1941 was Moscow.
I can't help but notice how common it is for people to confuse Stalingrad and the Caucasus with the Barbarossa campaign.
The Germans had a hard enough time reaching Rostov, they weren't driving to the Caucasus and Stalingrad in a 3 prong opening offensive.

Exactly. I think the reason people confuse Stalingrad with Barbarossa is the way history has recorded the Eastern Front. Most people know the Germans invaded then got their assed handed to them in Stalingrad. But it seems few know what happened between then.

After the German invasion started, Stalin retreated to a chateau and expected to be executed in a coup there.
When they came, it wasn't for a coup it was blind panic because he had beat all the initiative out prior. So he used that momentum.
Much of the govt was evacuated out of Moscow and heavy preparations were made for an insurgency.
Everything from marrying complete strangers to run recon and sabotage missions to training a stage act to enact the ending of inglorious bastards. Seriously the juggler was going to switch out her bowling pins for grenades when they had a good ratio of German officers in the audience.

This
And the fact that the US rebounded in six months after Pearl Harbor to practically destroy a Japanese fleet including four air craft carriers; effectively putting the Japs on the defensive for the rest of the war.
An amazing turnaround.

Imagine if Europe First didn't happen and the full brunt of our industry was in the Pacific War.
