You've never heard of the Sunday Dinner?

From my understanding, dinner is your main meal, typically more formal, sit down, not rushed.

Lunch is more of a quick mid-day meal.

I think this is all based on both the era and location in which you were raised.

It was very common, in southern states, for the noon meal to be called dinner in the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s.

Go to the deli section of your local grocery store around noon and ask them for one of those "Plate dinners" and get back to me.
After that google "best dinner box for kids" just for kicks.

Sure, I watch the Sopranos but couldn’t tell what time of day the scene took place
If someone invited me to dinner at noon I would immediately correct them and say it is lunch

country and blue collar folks.

I think long hour workmen tend to eat a big lunch and a lighter supper. So the three meals are breakfast, lunch and supper, and the biggest one is called dinner.

Ask a co-worker or friend to go grab some dinner at 11am and watch them look at you like you have a 3rd eye.

When I live in LA(until 1991) I called it dinner. Supper was supper. Moved to Virginia and lunch became the norm. Supper is still supper but dinner is acceptable.

Wouldn’t happen in some rural areas. I’ve had country boys from Georgia argue the opposite. Look at me funny for calling supper dinner

Get out and meet folks, baw

In our family, dinner and supper were synonymous. Breakfast, lunch, then dinner/supper.
