Yeah a handful of people. Grandfather and a few friends. One hung himself. All the others shot themselves.

Sorry about that, OK. It is something that isn't explainable to rational people. Those that choose to take that option are truly gone and nothing can help them.
My best friend did in September of 2013. I was the last person to speak to him. He left behind two sons and a wife and had everything most people think makes a person happy.
His younger brother, mother and father also took that option. It is an illness that isn't understood and breaks hearts every day.

This is so true. Coping and understanding is different for everyone.
It's comparable to understanding the mind of your loved one's murderer and then forgiving them.
It is easy to say it, but requires constant mental fortitude to truly believe.

One of my sister's friends in high school took his life. He had been telling people he was going to do it, but they didn't take him serious.
He went home and took a shotgun and put it under his chin. The bullet basically took off his entire face and traveled up thru the ceiling to the apartment above. The upstairs neighbor got pissed and came down to this kids apartment and started pounding on the door.
The kid was still alive and walked into the bathroom. The police said, that from the evidence, he looked at himself in the mirror. Then he went back to the shotgun and did himself in. Very sad.

Question for the "people who commit suicide are selfish cowards" crowd.
What about all the veterans in this country who commit suicide on a daily basis? Are they selfish?

One of my good friends from my hometown whom I've known most of my life killed himself about 2 months ago. Truly pisses me off. He was extremely smart & had a lot going for him, but his most serious issue was his alcoholism which throughout his life damaged/ruined pretty much every aspect of his life from personal relationships to his career to his health. I even talked to him about it on several occasions, including not too long before he killed himself. He refused to acknowledge that the alcohol was either the cause or at least escalated the problems & issues in his life, and if he would just get control of that first, he could handle the other issues much easier. Right before he killed himself, he pushed away everyone who tried to help, and had contact only with those who enabled him. His note blamed "issues" in his life which he "felt" there was no solution for, which angered me even more since he obviously disregarded every ounce of help people tried to give him. He simply refused to take responsibility & get help for his alcoholism and chose to wallow in self pity which only made his other 'issues' worse. I have never seen or heard of untreated alcoholism ending well. Without question, it will kill, one way or another, if left untreated, no matter who it is or how intelligent he is. The fact that someone so incredibly smart just refused to see this, and chose to unnecessarily pussy out angers me.

People commit suicide for a variety of reasons. Some are selfish, some are not.

I did not intend for this topic to become a debate on the appropriate way one should feel.
I believe that the living who grieve for them should be able to discuss perfectly natural reactions to such a personal tragedy and how it affected them, honestly, and without judgement.

A lot of people join the military for the wrong reasons, lack of opportunity elsewhere, paycheck, college money. So when they are required to perform the tasks for which the country expected them to do, they aren't mentally prepared for it
Bradley Manning and Bowe Bergdahl come to mind

This is how 100% of threads on suicide turn out on the OT. Like clock work.

I have two friends who had sons commit suicide over a breakup. It's devastating to the families

We all go thru our own trials and tribulations, but mental illness is something that many cannot overcome. In college I worked at a group home for bi-polar adults. It was incredibly heart breaking to see another human being suffering mentally. Although I do have sympathy to an extent, but I also believe those who kill themselves end up in hell. I pray I am wrong.

Yes, PhD student at LSU. Took his own life because he was about to be sentenced to decades of prison for being busted with a pound of weed. The WoD is a killer.
