1 in 4 adults in the U.S. has herpes. So you know someone that has it, they just aren’t telling you.
I have to report STD cases daily to my state department of health and the CDC for my job. CDC stopped tracking herpes as a mandated reportable STD around 2018. I have to report HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia but NOT herpes. So they obviously aren’t even really worried about it anymore. While not curable, outbreaks can be very easily treated now and medications available to prevent someone with herpes spreading it to their SO.
One thing that can be a problem is if a woman is pregnant and has herpes. If she’s having an active outbreak when she goes into labor they will usually do a c section to avoid the baby contracting herpes while passing through the birth canal (which can be really bad for the baby).

I can’t imagine having to go through life as one big herpe baby that caught it from my mother.

Neonatal herpes can actually kill a baby if they aren’t treated. Their immune system isn’t there yet to fight off the virus so it can affect all their organs and not just their skin.

Unfortunately, even with treatment some neonates end up having life long neuro issues. Any woman who has had a previous outbreak/or even a suspected outbreak should be on prophylaxis the last few weeks of pregnancy. It’s really sad, I’ve seen neonatal deaths and the mom never even knew she had herpes.

shite, there’s a lot more folks with it than you realize. I know of two people who have it.

My ex fiancee had it. She was in a relationship with a guy that cheated on her and gave it to her. He was her first. Before we started dating she told me that she had it and I still went through with a relationship with her.
For the record we didn't end the relationship because of it, I couldn't convince her to move to Louisiana from Philly.

I know a girl that was married to the only guy she had ever slept with for about 15 years. By all accounts she's what you'd call a "good girl" and didn't drink, do drugs, or party.
Her husband cheated on her and they divorced, then she went off the deep end and started drinking every night, doing cocaine, and smoke weed by herself - basically abandoning her kids every night.
Turns out she started chasing dudes like a divorced alcoholic drug user would, and the FIRST dude she had sex with gave her herpes.
We all think it's karma for bailing on her kids every night

70% of the population carries it, with or without symptoms

Nope, because she had it.
