If so, how did it happen? I know everyone says drugs is one of the biggest reasons why people end up on the streets, but I'm just curious exactly how it gets so bad that it gets to that point.

I know of one guy. Grew up in the ghetto and basically had to leave the city to escape it and because his mom was broke, he was forced to live in his car for a while before he could save up for a cheap apartment.

Yup. Meth. The guy had a big heart until he got in to deep. Had a wife and 3 kids too.

Yes

I haven't read the thread but I can imagine the post in it already.

All it takes is a couple bad decisions at the wrong times, even being too prideful, and something debeatating happening out of the blue that you couldn't help, and plenty of good men have found themselves with no where to lay their head for short periods of time and had to humble themselves and ask for assistance.

I know for a fact their will be some self-righteous folks itt but seriously I've seen some good hard working men take some tumbles.

I know a homeless lady who was married with kids. She went crazy and lesbian and is now living on the streets begging for money every minute of the day.

Essentially ya, on people's couches - out all night and literally on the street. Most people I know who got into drugs were reasonably well off at least but some got that far. Probably not that hard for someone who isn't that well off.

Mental illness is probably top of the list. If you're "just" an addict, you probably have enough sense to take advantage of some of the programs available. If you're an addict and crazy, maybe not.

this is true... most active drug addicts deep in an addiction isn't doing it to 'get high', they don't even get high anymore, they get 'well' ... and you're also right that doing the drugs and the fall out from
It is all a symptom of the bigger issue... it could be any number of things mentally wrong with the individual.... like Anthony Bordain said... "The first time I shot up I looked at myself in the mirror with a big grin. Something was missing in me, whether it was a self-image situation, whether it was a character flaw… There was some dark genie inside me that led me to dope… ...."

Child hood emotional scars including abuse, to sometimes people in their late adolescence or early 20's, no fault to them or warning, developer debilitating mental disorders like bipolar that can dwarf anxiety and depression which in and of themselves can ruin some people....

I've met good guys that fell into depression that hated to shave all the sudden in their mid 20s because they couldn't stand that person they had to look in that mirror. Wasn't just some 'pick yourself up pussy' bullshite. Mental illness can mantifest out of anywhere and raggedy across the spectrum.....

I guess what I'm saying is have an open mind with people and don't take your lot for granted.

Yeah I knew a homeless lady. She had an apartment, but lost her job and couldn't pay bills. Couldn't find another job and got evicted. Went from shelter to shelter but kept arguing with other residents or breaking rules. Slept on park benches some nights. Finally found a minimum wage job while living in a shelter and then a coworker let her rent a room in a house.

I knew a super-smart guy in college who had Asperger's that got progressively worse and worse. He started believing in whack-o conspiracy theories, changed his last name from McDonald because he didn't want to be associated with the fast food chain. Eventually he moved back to Sacramento and just wanders the streets, a shell of who he once was. We haven't heard from or of him in a very long time.

Probably been said, but is drugs or mental illness or both. Especially with long term homeless. People can have a bad stretch and end up in a shelter or street etc briefly. But to stay? It's drugs or mental illness. And when I say drugs I of course include alcohol.
