I don't know. I have 3. And a large detached garage.
One is just work/ business stuff. One is just large tools I rarely use. Tile saws, sand blaster, engine hoist, generators and large power tools. Plus all our outside Halloween and Christmas stuff. The third is climate controlled and is full of junk and a waste of $140 a month and I've been giving away the stuff out of it.
Then my wife had a little one for work.
I plan to cut 10x8 out of the back room of the garage to make a storage room and then I'll get rid of two of the storage units. Just fixing termite damage discovered after hurricane damage.

For people who are relocating, downsizing, or need additional space to store their belongings, self-storage apartments can be a terrific alternative. For instance renting a self-storage unit can be a temporary fix until you're ready to organize your possessions or relocate to a more prominent location if you're moving into a smaller apartment or house and won't have enough room for your furniture and belongings. A loss in the family or a move for employment are two examples of significant life upheavals for which self-storage units might be helpful. Having a secure storage facility for your stuff might bring you peace of mind during these stressful and overwhelming situations.

Haven’t seen it mentioned in the thread, so sorry if it’s already been addressed- but there is a new (within the last 5 yrs or so) practice amongst all the large corporate storage facilities (Public Storage, Extra Space, CubeSmart et al) where every few months, they “review” your account- and then promptly raise your rent by $15 or $20 per month.. doesnt seem like much, but quickly adds up.. I know it’s a new practice b/c circa 12 or 15 yrs ago, i had a small unit at a Public Storage in Texas; i kept the unit for several years and the price was locked in at $49 per month, and never went up.. then, jsut a few years ago, i lived for a year in downtown NOLA- during that time i had a storage unit (large corporate facility) in Elmwood, started out paying $85 per month and at the end of the year, after quarterly reviews, i wound up paying $140 per month …. Moral of the story is, if you absolutely need a storage unit, find a mom and pop facility that will agree to lock in whatever price you get, except for normal cost increases every year or two .

What is so important to have a self storage for (as an example) over a year?
There are 3 aircraft carriers based near me with a crew of roughly 5000 people per ship. Those deploy roughly a year at a time.
Most of those aren't exactly officers who have a family staying at home so there's a lot of people who rent but they aren't going to pay rent for a year while on a boat.
A hell of a lot cheaper to put your personal shite in storage than pay rent on an empty apartment.

The only time I ever had one was the last time I moved. They’re great for storing stuff so you don’t have to move everything in one day. You can start putting some stuff in there weeks before moving day and move into the new place at your own pace over the next few days or weeks.

I was using mine for Christmas decorations. Had some gigantic reindeer and nutcrackers.
Gave it all to the police department and got rid of the storage unit.

Theoretically, the idea is to put crap offsite so you have a way to go through everything remaining and put it back in more efficiently. In practice, it becomes a recurring cost for shite you will never use again.
This, and I recommend you do not tell your wife you have one, because mine will say at least three times a month, “bring this to the storage place because we don’t have room.” Then you have to buy another one, and another one, an endless cycle….
