Serious question: would military men and police officers say the same thing if their comrades or other civilians were in the line of fire? I don't know for sure, but I would highly doubt they would agree with you. And they are trained professionals
I'm not military or law enforcement, so it's tough for me to answer that.
However, I've seen combat footage on youtube and the way those infantry guys shoot and scoot during combat, it doesn't look too much different than an active shooter situation.

And you are just as incorrect the 2nd time around.
Look, you don't want to carry a gun, don't do it.

Just because you went thru it doesn't make your opinion any less asinine. If somebody is armed and trying to kill you, you have a lot better chance of living if you are likewise armed. It's not rocket science.

Once again, you are looking for (or giving) a definitive answer to a question or issue that does not have one.

Again
A guy is sitting in a crowded room, stands up and immediately starts shooting those around him. How many rounds does he get off before you can do anything? 5? 6? How does having a gun save you if you are the target of those first shots? It doesn't.

only if you know its coming, which in most of these cases, you don't

This shite always comes up when things like this happen. A CC would've done no good last night. The guy sat in the back of the theater, waited until it got dark and started shooting people from behind. Then this shite head tried to blend in with the crowd. It would take an extraordinary human being to turn around and pull a weapon and shoot the shooter in a frantic crowd. It would take an almost SEAL like human being.

If you are 1 of the first targets, nothing. If you are anyone else, yes.

Please tell me the logic behind this belief. I honestly don't get where you're coming from here.

This goes back to my earlier point about situation awareness. Pay attention to those around you and what's going on.

and thus...common sense (common sense includes practical awareness) would be the proper tool

I'm not really sure what's funny. The guy was shooting and moving around a dark theater while people were running around. That's asking an AWFUL lot of someone with a CC permit. You're acting like having that permit makes one an expert marksman. The best thing to do in that type of situation is get the frick down and out as fast as possible.

I'm one of those. It is in our policy to:
Preserve life over property.
When it comes to lives there is a priority hierarchy:
1. Innocents
2. Us (the cops)
3. Offender.

I see what you're saying but you're not thinking this through all the way to the end. Situational awareness will hopefully allow you to identify a threat. But it will not give you the ability to do anything about that threat in and of itself. Sure, you may know that guy walking behind you looks like he could be up to no good, or that guy who just walked in the restraunt looks like he may be crazy. But if you're unarmed, what can you do about it? There will be times where flight is not an option.

You're really showing your arse in this discussion.
Is it A proper tool?
Absolutely.
I would say it's very crucial tool, but to say it's always the definitive proper tool is ignorant.

Possibly. And like I said, I just do not believe that those chances are worth the need to carry.
Just like the multitude of other things that I could do for self preservation purposes, but choose not do because the chances are so slim. As do you.
