Not always the best strategy. My Dad is a good example of the opposite. Always took advantage of the matching to the max, kept it through multiple changes of majority ownership changes. When it finally went from public to private he was 2nd only to the Pres/CEO in profits from the stock buyback.

Govt isn't going to take your money
This is either the funniest or dumbest shite I've read in a long time. I can't decide which one.
You mean, the government isn't going to steal more money than that already do?
I don't know what rock you're living under, but is there room for me too? Cause I hate to break it to you, but the government steals your money EVERY.frickING.DAY.

Always exceptions, but it doesn't change the better decision in most cases.

No, but I have some minor concern that extreme inflation will render it mostly worthless.
I see no way that this can be avoided. In fact, I think that is the plan.

Dad invested in other mutuals and stuff so not just in the employer. And he was also exceptional by today's standards in that he was with the same employer for 35 years. Not gonna see many 35 years "gold watch" employees any more. 3-5 years sure, 35 without the hyphen separating the numbers, not even likely anymore.

You forget the part where many/most people’s tax brackets drop when they retire
This notion is misguided, most people who save for retirement will be at the same tax bracket or higher when they retire. When I say save, I mean people who have the combination of 401Ks, IRAs, SS benefits, taxable investments, rental properties etc.
Liquidating all of these assets over 20-30 years will generate significant tax bills, especially among people in the thread who save enough to be targeted for the sums they've accumulated.

I don't believe I'll ever see any of the thousands I'm forced to dump into social security every year.

This. It's theft. I'm at the end of a long government Ponzi scheme.
