Inside workers make minimum wage. If they are managers or an experienced cook, they will make more than minimum.
Carhops make $4.25/hr + tip.

I would say that only a minority of people know that they don't make minimum wage.

How in the hell do they not make that known and put an option to tip on CC payments?

I do, but I've been getting kind of annoyed lately by the servers at the Denham Springs Sonic. They pretend that they never have change on them. I'm guessing that they hope you will tell them to keep the change while they skate back and make you wait?

I can appreciate that and I don't know the answer there. I just know that the outside workers get $4 per hour plus tips. There are two of us on this thread now that have pretty reliable info on this

Your info may be true but it isn't universal. Like I said, they are payed over $12 an hour in my area and it's jumping to $15.

Read the minimum wage laws. A server can be paid less than minimum wage as long as their tips + wage = minimum wage.

If they don't get tips they still get minimum wage, the difference comes out of Sonic's pocket.

quote:

The American federal government requires a wage of at least $2.13 per hour be paid to employees that receive at least $30 per month in tips. If wages and tips do not equal the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour during any week, the employer is required to increase cash wages to compensate.

Maybe you should read them. They vary state to state.
quote:

Unlike many other states, Washington does not allow a tip credit against the state's minimum wage. In addition to any tips or gratuities received during their shift, tipped employees in Washington, such as waitresses and bartenders, must be paid the full state minimum wage of $11.00 per hour in cash.

They are making $12 now and move to $15 next year.

Sorry, wasn't responding to you, just the myriad of posters who think "servers only make $4/hr" and that they depend on tips.

That's true. Just trying to dispel the myth that server's everywhere are making $2.13 an hour. In fact, that's only true in 6 states, although those states are AL, GA, MS, SC, LA, and TN, so it applies to most of this board. Some states require the employer to make up the difference. Some don't. Some require the full federal minimum, some more.

My niece just quit at a Ft. Worth Sonic as her 1st job (was getting worked too many hours at night, she's a senior in HS and taking college courses mostly).

She related that the people working inside get paid minimum wage, the workers outside get $4/hr +tips.

This info is readily available. The minimum cash wage for server's in Florida is $5.08 and employers are required to make up the difference to $8.10 an hour.

If they don't work in LA, MS, AL, TN, GA, or SC, the server in your life is lying to you.

Department of Labor

edit- I did find this so I guess Florida employers only have to "make up the difference" to $5.08($0.00), due to a credit that expires next year:
quote:

However, the employer must pay tipped employees a direct wage. The direct wage is calculated as equal to the minimum wage ($8.10) minus the 2003 tip credit ($3.02), or a direct hourly wage of $5.08 as of January 1, 2017.

I would rather tip the ones that are smart enough not to skate my food out... I mean what value do the skates really add? More food spilled and more falls and injuries leading to higher prices?

I do.
Young kids a lot of time work there and if they show initiative, have good attitude and aren't lazy I like to reward them.

If paying cash. They get the change and a buck.

Sonic is the only place where I was hit up for a tip as she was giving me my order. Something like, "it's tough when people like that guy (motions to a truck leaving) don't leave you anything." It was weird. Made me not want to tip. But she was quick and our order was right. Lol
