When you say "the government" you say it as if its on entity that works together. You think "the government" as a whole would be able to hide something? And with social media, things are more transparent than ever.
What I do think is that what is going on in Italy is the driving factor behind all of this. The US doesn't want to be in a situation where there isn't enough resources to take care of everyone who needs taking care of. I honestly believe 4 months from now this will be all forgotten about and life will go on.

The numbers are certainly being cooked. Not sure if it's from the testing debacle early on. Whatever the reason is, I'm not sure. But some of this stuff seems like a total overreaction (some, not all).
