Hotels are MUCH cheaper and easier to use.

This is why we (family of four) tent camp on our yearly western road trip. We will do maybe one night every seven in a hotel for laundry and refresh. Hitting all of the NPs in Colorado and Utah, as well as the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, this year.

Its a great gig, you can also become park hosts, which a lot of retired couples do in summer.

Travel from park to park, spending months

They make about the same financial sense as a boat. I am on my third one and I keep it because we use it for a hunting camp along with six or seven camping trips a year. It’s like having a vacation home that you can take wherever you feel like. That said they are broken constantly as build quality is shite across 90% of them. It’s all lipstick on a pig.

I know some guys that use them on remote jobsites that require long term (3+ months) visits. I assume the RV is owned by a business and depreciated as a company truck. Whether they stop at Yellowstone on the way or in the off months is another story.

It would have to be one heck of a remote jobsite for me, as I like the way a hotel will clean your room and change your sheets.

A friend has a business that requires frequent on-site visits all over and has had a really nice one for years, business write off and has a damn fine tailgating spot for LSU games.

I think that is what they did per my parents. They met several retirees that traveled all over the country and host work or something like that. They pretty much did it almost year round. They weren't picking up garbage or cleaning bathrooms.

I mean... possibly how?

Wife's grandparents retired and lived in one for about 10 years while they travelled the country. I assume it paid for itself.

LOL

I've pissed away so much money on these things... Although due to covid and inflation I could sell my current one for more than I paid for it.

purchased an old bus and am converting it. It’s currently comfortable but doesn’t have a shower. And it’s downright awesome. I didn’t like the build quality on RV’s so I wanted to build it myself. How it started

I’d be curious to see more of this. Did you already know how to do all of this or did you teach yourself?

I've been building and fixing stuff all my life. That said, I never did this to a bus and am learning as I go.

There are a lot of youtube channels that follow golks that do thus to buses.

My bus is a 1986 Crown Supercoach school bus.

That sounds just like the movie Nomadland.

Never seen it. But for retirees who have home paid off, vehicles too, then if you want a RV or 5th-wheel with pop-outs and can travel whenever, where ever then it's a good gig as Roger said. I think Roger works in a park or at least has much knowledge about it, but I think for retirees that have zero debt, then you can pay it off until you're too old to drive(health issues) or can't deal with the hassles of long-term travels.
