I can agree with you on some things but this illustrates a major point I'm trying to make. If something were to come along that saved me 10 hours of work a week, something else would fill that time.

And you would be much more productive, correct?

With increased flow of information and capability, expectations have simply risen to the point it nearly has evened out. I'm not trying to insist accomplishing a given task hasn't become easier, I'm asserting that if it's been replaced by 5 other tasks that require the overall same effort, then it's a wash.

Not from a productivity standpoint

quote:

On average I work 50-60 hours a week with no overtime, and many of my friends work more than that. That's just considered normal for a young professional, and it's true across a lot of fields.

In 20 years the youngsters will tell you "that sounds awful" when you talk of the good ole days when you worked 50 hours.

Interesting how many people, including myself post from work on this website. That kind of lax time was never possible 30 years ago.

Also, speaking from experience, there are still plenty of areas in the South where small houses and used vehicles are the rule and not the exception. There have always been rich and poor people. We may not have your Cold War, but Islamic terrorism is just a different iteration of the foreign enemy who can strike without notice.

Of course. However we're not living with the imminent threat of MAD. We were taught in school that we probably wouldn't live to be adults. Life is much more carefree.

However there are some negatives. People have become prudish, and liberty is becoming more limited. It's a price people will pay to the government in order to have it care more for their needs.

All I'm trying to say here is that when I look at American quality of life I notice just as many similarities as differences. People naturally want to think society is moving forward, but in some ways technology over the last few decades has really only served to more effectively sell people shite, rather than enhance their quality of life.

To some degree, yes. People are stupid and easy suckers and will buy anything that makes them feel normal around their peers.

We live in different worlds. You can't compare these things.

Being a family man during these times is much different than being in college, it's a silly comparison.

Did the lack of options originate with a lack of searching or unwillingness to try something different though?

So you are saying millenials are the people who developed all these new companies?

Uber- Travis Kalanick born August 6, 1976
Garrett Camp born October 4, 1978

Netflix: Reed Hastings born October 8, 1960

google: Larry Page born March 26, 1973

Lyft was founded by guys in their early 30's. And if you consider that millenials, Which i do not, copied it from uber.

Facebook might be the only big this founded my a millenal, again if you consider 1984 to be that.

These arent millenials.

All of those business' target customers are millenials though

Why's that?

are cutting the cord at what appears to be a pretty high rate. It seems that older folk usually just cursed the companies under their breath

Most of the cord cutting millennials also rely on their parents (shocker) for their HBO, ESPN, etc. logins.

Easier access to more companies. I'm not gonna use a company with a shitty reputation or sky high prices when there are 10 other options to be found online

Because they grew up using smartphones and the Internet. That's pretty much it.
