Couple 3:
A couple who attended Couple 1's wedding perhaps has the strangest details thus far.
They have been dating for apparently six or so years and were supposed to get engaged earlier this year. However, Couple 1 became engaged right before the male in Couple 3 was about to make his move. I guess he didn't want either couple to compete for attention so he has decided to hold out for a little longer before he pops the question. Still, the girl expects it any day.
The guy in Couple 3 should have proposed at Couple 1's wedding. Girls love upstaging their friends and stealing their moment.

My wife told me it was time (we had been dating 4 years by the time we got engaged).

Its prob better now than it used to be.
Couples get married later, live together more now, have sex more before marriage, coordinate their life plans better and make a better decision based on their experiences.
In the old days all those things occured far less frequently and people were immediately unhappy when they found themselves in an non compatible relationship.

If these three couples were friends of mine, the only real judgment I would pass on them and their engagement situations would deal with whether or not they decided to hold the wedding during football season.
One of them did. Couple 1 was married on the day of the SEC Championship Game. When my girlfriend received the wedding invitation back in September I told her that I would not be attending due to a conflict of interest.
Not only was their wedding held the day of the game, but it was held during the afternoon while the game was being played.
I declined to attend in the event that LSU would make it...which seemed like a possibility just a few weeks back.

I talked about it with my wife; we agreed it was time. I asked her to go pick a ring, which she did. I talked to her dad and the bought the ring. I gave it to her like 4 months later at a surprising moment.
Things have been great. If you can't have a mature conversation with your S/O about living a life together, how do you expect to be handle marriage?

Call me old fashioned, but it seems like you are removing a bit of the romance from the situation by being so open about it. Personally, an engagement shouldn't necessarily come as a shock to either party, it should be somewhat anticipated, but it also shouldn't be expected.
Well being old fashioned didn't exactly help the divorce rate. People are discussing these things more because they want to be successful with their marriages, instead of making sure they surprise their girl with a lifetime commitment for the sole reason of being romantic.

Couple 1.
1. She is 22 and he is 28. They have been dating for several years? How old were they when they started? Was she 17 and he was was 23?
2. She's 22 and wants to get married? She's too young
Couple 2 sounds sounds rich. If she is at least an OT 7 I'll marry her

I dunno. Seems like you would discuss it before you take the plunge.

Your post is the only thing I can think of worse than the couples you described.

Why not? I wouldn't buy a car without driving it first.
Perfect analogy. That is, if you see her as a possession and plan on getting rid of her in 5 years.
