After viewing a Walker Animal Shelter posting, I called to inquire about a dog. I was told this dog was not available for adoption until vet exam, call back next week. I allow 2 days to pass & visit Walker Animal Shelter today. Surprised to find out this dog is being shipped to Alabama even though I am local & willing to adopt??

Something stinks- I wonder if these folks get paid to ship away good dogs?

Most dogs have a hold period because they want to give the owner time to claim it if it's a lost or missing dog. Then they get a checkup by the vet and the vet fixes any issues or diseases the dog may have and a mandatory spade or neuter. At that point they are available for adoption. Someone signed the paperwork before you got there and is having the dog shipped (usually a free service). These shelters don't care where the dog goes, only that it's a good home.

I don't know what happened here, but I can assure you Shelters aren't scams...

People working there are desperately trying to find homes for dogs

YES THEY ARE!!!! I figured this out after every pure breed dog we wanted kept getting snatched up, even after we would follow the rules. We tried the humane society, etc.

We got the low down from someone who used to work at one. All of the shelters have agreements with rescue groups that pay them kickbacks. What's left are the mutts, typically either pits or pit bull mixes that no one wants.

Quite frankly, anyone who suggests picking up a dog from a shelter or a rescue can go f themselves. Our experiences with both has been horrendous. All seemed like money grabs with high and mighty white woman running these things. I'd rather spend money at a qualified breeder than have to deal with the bs and drama that comes from dealing with shelters and rescues.

Dogs at animal shelters are often pulled by private rescue organizations. The people at the animal shelter probably forgot that someone showed interest. I know our local animal shelter workers aren't exactly the sharpest tools in the shed..

Probably shouldn't have walked in there holding a jar of peanut butter and a bottle of lube.

The Washington Post had a long article recently about how the rescue operations tug at heartstrings of donors (women on Facebook) to raise tons of cash to "rescue" dogs.

They spend a lot of that cash at auctions buying dogs put up for sale by breeders, the "puppy mills" the rescue crowd claims to hate. They then sell/adopt-out the dog to someone like you, or someone in Alabama if they pay more.

The breeders are actually cranking out more pups to auction to the rescuers, who are their cash cows. It's crazy.

Dog rescuers, flush with donations, buy animals from the breeders they scorn

My wife and I were looking to adopt and they said we had to wait for the checkup. We called back every few days to make sure that the dog we were interested in was in good health and still available. When it came time adopt, I showed up 30 minutes before they opened to make sure I had first dibs and when I got in they told me the dog was adopted the previous day. Although they also told me that they sent her to the vet the previous day. Later on she was listed through a rescue site that cost 3 times as much than adopting from a shelter.

You are correct! I paid $2K for my Golden in 2005 & he was the best dog ever. I was only trying to give a less fortunate pup a chance. Lesson learned, I will be contacting my breeder today. Thanks!!

I would raise hell to my local city council or what not, is it going to a home there or sold for science? That used to happen in New Orleans until the local vet association fought it.

There was a huge article in the New York Times about the reselling of pure bred dogs that were bought by rescue organizations.

Animals Shelters have limited room and limited resources. Private animal rescue orgs have a lot more money (from donors) and are more streamlined. They give animals shelters around the country/regions a place to transport certain breeds of dogs to adopt out.

It’s really a win win for everyone, including the dogs. People who want specific breeds can get one from those orgs, the dogs get adopted faster, and the local shelter doesn’t have to put as much time and resources into finding the dog a home and can use that time and resources on the mutts that are harder to place.

If you want a specific dog breed, look private (or a breeder if you want a guaranteed purebred/pup)...if you want a mutt, go to the shelter. I don’t see how that’s a “scam”, it’s just how it is these days.

ETA: even that Wash Post article is talking about the dog rescues, not the pound/Animal Shelters. I am indifferent on those groups, but they serve a market for people who want specific breeds without having to wait on one to just show up from their local shelter

If you want a dog that bad just hang out one weekend in a wooded area close to a large city. There's bound to be someone taking their dog for a ride.
